Think it's impossible to memorize a deck of cards? Try this! (Language independent. Natural image generation. No reading, word formation, or sound substitutions required!)

If the idea of memorizing a deck of cards has scared you off in the past, I encourage you to read on, because this system will get you there! No prior experience with memory techniques required!

If you’re a veteran mnemonicist, I hope you’ll keep reading too and share your thoughts!

A little backstory first:
There was a really great collaborative discussion on the forum recently between @ink @SherlockBourne @fred2 @erikfromholland and myself that involved developing a system that combined the shaper system and a category system to arrive at easy to recognize substitute images to represent numbers. As the discussion went along, the idea of using this approach to encode playing cards came up. A system was developed and seemed pretty promising.

I tested it out with a “layman” who doesn’t use memory techniques and it was an amazing success. I think that it can be a very powerful way to introduce the ideas of visual memory techniques to folks regardless of age, language, reading ability, or prior experience or exposure to mnemonics. Memorizing a whole deck of cards is something that can be incredibly impressive and almost magical to be able to learn do, which can be a great way to hook someone into this fascinating world of memory!

I’m not sure if this particular system has been thought of before, but it seemed new to me and it worked so well that I wanted to try sharing it more broadly with the community.

So here’s how the system works:

Each suit represents a category of objects. The category is based on the shape of the suit icon, as follows:
:spades: - a SPADE looks a bit like an arrowhead or spear point. Spades will represent weapons or war.

:hearts: - a HEART is a heart, which is a bodily organ. Hearts will represent anatomical features.

:clubs: - a CLUB looks like a tree, so Clubs will represent nature and outdoorsy items.

:diamonds: - a DIAMOND is an item that represents wealth, extravagance, and luxury.

With these categories in mind, we can now start to assign imagery for every card, and let the suit category inform the actual item visualized. The following images are the ones that I mapped out, but the best way to learn any system is to try to come up with as many of the images as you can on your own, using the first thing that pops into your head when looking at them.

A :spades: - Spades means weapons/war. To me the A is shaped like the tip of a missile.
2 :spades: - For me, the shape of the 2 looks like a sickle or scythe wielded by Death on the battlefield.
3 :spades: - The 3 shape makes for a good crossbow.
4 :spades: - a 4 is a sharp blade like a combat knife.
5 :spades: - the top horizontal line of the 5 is the barrel of an old battlefield cannon, sitting on a big wooden wheel.
6 :spades: - the 6 reminds me of a submarine poking its periscope above the surface to look for targets.
7 :spades: - the 7 is a pair of nunchucks, mid-swing.
8 :spades: - the 8 is a shiny pair of brass knuckles.
9 :spades: - the 9 is a flail, a medieval weapon that has a ball and chain attached to a stick.
10 :spades: - for 10’s, we only need to focus on the 0, which in this case represents a grenade.
J :spades: the shape of a J is like a flintlock pistol like pirates used.
Q :spades: - Q looks like a bomb with a fuse coming out.
K :spades: - if you turn the K on its side, with the flat line on top, it looks like a sniper rifle on a stand. Leave it as is, it could be siege tower ready to roll against the castle walls.

A :hearts: - Hearts is anatomy… The legs of the A look like long legs below a skirt.
2 :hearts: - 2 resembles a lower leg, ankle and foot, almost like the leg of cartoon cat or dog.
3 :hearts: - the 3 looks like a pair of buttcheeks.
4 :hearts: - this one was a bit tricky but it looks like the torso of a stickfigure with an arm bent at the elbow, hand on head like a facepalm. So, bent arm.
5 :hearts: - the round bulge at the bottom of the 5 looks like a big belly in profile view.
6 :hearts: - the 6 reminds me of a fist giving a thumbs-up.
7 :hearts: - the 7 is the sharp point of a knee, or maybe a pointy canine tooth.
8 :hearts: - there are a few things the 8 could be… The most family friendly is probably a thin waisted person, hourglass figure.
9 :hearts: - 9 looks like a ear to me.
10 :hearts: - the 0 here looks like an eye.
J :hearts: - the J shape reminds me of a bare human femur, the longest bone in the body.
Q :hearts: - a Q looks like a belly button with the umbilical cord attatched.
K :hearts: - the K is a yawning open mouth.

A :clubs: - Clubs is nature and outdoorsiness… The A looks like a camping tent.
2 :clubs: - that 2 looks like a snake reared up and ready to strike.
3 :clubs: - the 3 reminds me of a bird with wings spread, flapping away
4 :clubs: - the 4 reminded me of the blade of a quaint countryside windmill.
5 :clubs: - the 5 is a cute little seahorse
6 :clubs: - the 6 is a curled up snail shell.
7 :clubs: - the 7 reminded me of a ledge overlooking a canyon or a jagged cliff edge
8 :clubs: - the 8 is two stones balanced on each other, very zen.
9 :clubs: - the 9 looks like the head of an elephant, big round ear, dangling trunk.
10 :clubs: - the 0 could be a large boulder or maybe a bird egg.
J :clubs: - the J reminds me of a caterpillar or inchworm dangling from a branch
Q :clubs: - Q looks a lot like a turtle, round shell with the head curiously poking out.
K :clubs: - turn the K on its side for a nice picnic table to sit at and observe all of this nature.

A :diamonds: - Diamonds represent extravagance and wealth. The A is an expensive private jet.
2 :diamonds: - the 2 is a totally extravagant swan shaped inflatable boat!
3 :diamonds: - the puffy 3 reminds me of some artificially inflated lips, as some wealthy influencers are known to get.
4 :diamonds: - a sleek sailboat, perfect for high society yachting events.
5 :diamonds: - the 5 is a revolutionary form of transportation, the Segway. Why walk, if you can afford a segway?
6 :diamonds: the 6 is a luscious shrimp about to be dipped in cocktail sauce. (To remember if the shrimp is the 6 or the 9, think of how you would a hold a shrimp by the tail and dunk the body… A natural 6 shape.)
7 :diamonds: - the 7 reminds me of a jet-ski in mid jump, like in the classic N64 game of my youth “Waverace.”
8 :diamonds: - the 8 is an outrageously expensive ring with a diamond on top as big as the ring itself.
9 :diamonds: - a golf club high in the air after a sweet drive on an expensive country club course.
10 :diamonds: - the 0 here could be a gold coin, or maybe a swimming pool, or maybe a swimming pool filled with gold coins.
J :diamonds: - the J looks like a fancy pipe that an aristocratic person might smoke. Or maybe a shiny gold sink faucet if you spin it upside down.
Q :diamonds: - the Q is a lovely necklace with a sparkling gem dangling from it.
K :diamonds: - turn the K on its side so the flat line is at the bottom and you’ve got a crown or tiara, fit for royalty.

So, there you have some starting images. To put it all together in practice you can use any technique you’d like!

For those brand new to memory techniques I like to have them try a simple linking sequence where for example the Necklace gem falls of and plugs the barrel of the Tommy Gun which explodes and sends shrapnel ripping through the Windmill blade cloth, the windmill keeps turning and the blade slaps into a guy’s Fat Belly, causing him to puke all over a Snail who crawls frantically away, leaving a slime trail across the Missile Warhead, which launches and demolishes a Camping Tent… Etc. With a little creativity and good interaction, you’ll be able to follow your crazy cause and effect story all the way through the deck.

You can also use this list alongside introducing the idea of a memory palace journey and create mini scenes of 2 or 3 interactions at each loci.

I tested this system out with a friend who is not a memory technician and has never considered being able to memorize a whole deck of cards. He tried a baseline test of just trying brute force memorization with no techniques. He was able to remember 5 out of the first 6 cards and missed the suit of another. He couldn’t get any farther than that. After I walked him through this system, he easily knocked out every card and was able to recall them perfectly with almost no hesitation. He’s not gonna break any speed records, but he was flabbergasted at how great the system worked and how fun it was to create the absurd story with the card images.

If you made it all the way to the end here, thanks for checking this system out! I hope you try it or try teaching it to someone. If you do, please leave a reply and share how it went. Also, if you see different images in these number shapes, please share them! It would be great to have a library of useful images for these categories and numbers to be able to pull from and suggest when sharing the technique!

Tim, under the Suit of Spades I personally prefer to use the Jet that you have under the Diamonds Suit. That’s just my personal preference, as I was a conscripted National Serviceman (Soldier) many years ago attached to the then: 10 Anti-Aircraft Regiment; Youngsfield; Cape Town, so Delta-winged images of silhouetted aircraft e.g. Russian Migs hold a very special place in my memory. The South African Airforce’s strike aircraft equivalent weapons were Mirages that had similarly shaped Delta-wings. Whilst on the topic of warfare I would have opted for a “Boomerang” (for number “7” as opposed to Nunchukas). Whilst a Flail for 9 obviously works well, I visualize the “9” as a “Whip” (Cat-of-Nine Tails). Here I had in mind the ‘flogging’ of crew members on ships in Captain Bligh’s time (Mutiny on the Bounty). I will be playing around to substitute other Playing Card Peg words for certain ones that conflict with my Position Pegs #1 - #52 as already alluded. I also need to find a suitable image for the Ace of Diamonds now that the Jet has been relocated for “War purposes”. Being South African, the Ace of Diamonds reminds me of the “Mining Headgear” found on our Gold/Diamond Mines in South Africa and as Diamonds is the Suit of Wealth, Riches and Extravagance, it’s well suited to represent the Ace of Diamonds!! Picture of “Mining Headgear” below:

I haven’t settled on my final list of all peg words for my playing cards yet but I will fill you in with choices I decide to make once I’ve thought it through further.

Here’s an idea for 10 of War (Spades) a Zulu Shield and Spear:

But an even better one I think would be a Russian Landmine (Cheesemine) that is shaped like a Zero. 0 = 10:

For King of Spades my Letter to Shape would bring me to the obvious AK47 Assault Rifle that is shaped like a “K”:

I was back and forth on “Jet” vs. “Missile” (I also had a blockade/barrier as a possibility for the A :spades: )

It was harder for me to come up with an A :diamonds: that wasn’t the Jet. Love learing about what everyone else “sees” in these numbers.

In case you missed it. The Ace of Diamonds represents a “Mine’s Headgear”. Beautiful silhouetted picture of Mining Headgear above. You won’t find anything quite as profoundly “A” looking than a Mining Gear

I thought of the mine, felt it conflicted with the Q bomb, but it could work! What matters is that its clear to you when you try recalling.

That Mine Headgear is very cool, I don’t think I’ve ever seen one before! Similar to oil derrick that I’m familiar with. Cool to see all the regional instinctive shape links!

I’m working up in Johannesburg at the moment. Johannesburg falls in the province called Gauteng. The above Mining Gear picture I sent you is currently very local for me.

The Q Bomb you’ve given is an excellent image more especially if you envision it as the type of Bomb in the Peter Sellers Comedy movie the Revenge of the Pink Panther where he had a “Special Delivery” LOL!! Clip below:

Love the classic Pink Panther! This is my iconic bomb image association:

Excellent clip. I remember one of the villians in the series was Eartha Kitt (Jazz Singer) as Cat Woman.

Tim I suggest you swop your “Batman Bomb” (known as a Cherry Bomb around with the hand grenade. Cherry Bomb fits the picture of a 6 of Spades better and the Pin of a hand grenade looks more like the Queen of Spades. See my images below:

Incidentally, I opted for a Red Coloured Cherry Bomb as a number 6 also reminds me of a cherry and that is where the bomb gets its name from.

I can see the Q as the grenade, but I already have the 0 as the grenade right now so I’d need a new 0, and I like 6 as the submarine/periscope a lot… Thats the fun but also difficult part about the construction phase, if you change one you might cause a domino effect forcing you to change a good one to avoid sameness or conflict! I see how the shapes fit though!

I have also changed the Ace of Spades to a Vietnam US Soldier (well skull actually)

But as you said before each to their own. Whatever resonates best with you is best.

So the Jet can go back to Ace of Diamonds but not a warfare Jet!!

But perhaps the Windmill works better? although Windmill moves away from Shaper-System more towards an “Intuitive-System”? If you are happy moving away from Shaper-System then the 5 of Spades could be the “Pentagon Building” as opposed to a “Tommy Gun”?

6 of Clubs could be a Sloth for similar reasons your 9 of Clubs is an elephant!

Not for this, no mixing rules! It’s all about the visual shape of the number. I like the sloth for 6! I can see the horse head in the 4 as well.

I looked at developing a further set of objects for Hearts = Hobbies/ Pastime Pleasures:

I have the following Shaper Images for the cards:

AH = Eiffel Tower (sight-seeing)
2H = Ladies Shoes (shopping with wife)
3H = Ladies Boobs (Sun tanning on holiday)
4H = Model Ship Building (Ship in a bottle)
5H = Unicycling (exercising the Core)
6H = Golfing (Shape of Club)
7H = Spring Board Diving (Shape of Diving Board)
8H = Kettle Balling (weight-lifting)
9H = Hot-Air Balloon (Shape of Balloon)
10H = Hula-Hoop (Shape of Hoop) or Basketball (Shape of Hoop)
JH = Snorkeling (Snorkel is “J” shaped
QH = Lassoing (Lasso is Q shaped)
KH = Beer Drinking (Table K-Shaped)

A couple of images:

@TheHumanTim I really like this system derived from our brain-storming. I am happy with Clubs being things outdoors (“Countryside”), Diamonds being (Wealth and Riches) and Spades being (Weapons and War). the suit that is really worrying me is Hearts as (Body Parts). Don’t get me wrong as I understand that a “Heart” is an organ of the Human Body and you are suggesting shapes corresponding to the Body.

The major problem I have with body parts is that you can very quickly use your body as a ‘ready-made’ system of Loci as your body is something you always carry around with you. My suggestion was (and still is) that “Hearts” could be better depicted as a “Hollywood” theme. Hearts = Hollywood.

Whilst my Ace of Hearts/ 3 of Hearts and 4 of Hearts in my suggested "Hollywood’ schema are all ‘body parts’, the differentiator for me (i.e. where I won’t possibly get confused between my body loci and my Heart Suit card peg words), is that the card pegs used are all clearly part of a female’s anatomy. Therefore, Marilyn Monroe’s legs forming an A-shape in her familiar Hollywood iconic scene of her standing over an air vent and having her skirt blown up remains a card for me as: 1) my legs are not as shapely as Marilyn’s and, 2) I don’t wear dresses, therefore nothing gets confused in translation! Similarly for 3 of Hearts being “Hollywood Plastic Boobs” nothing gets mixed up as: 1) I don’t wear a push-up bra and 2) I have never had plastic surgery done on any part of my body. The 4 of Hearts I’ve chosen are a set of shapely Hollywood female legs crossed over or bent similar to a flamingo, no confusion there either for same reasons given. Anyways, I haven’t yet completed my Hollywood cast of Playing cards but I particularly like the theme, as Hollywood plays with the “theatre of the mind” and all my mnemonic devises (save my body loci previously referred to), are all images in cartoon format. I chose cartoons as images as it separates ‘reality’ from ‘fiction’ to me and in using cartoon images, it makes me far more bold in some of the more bizarre images that I sometimes conjure up in my mind. Anyway, my Hollywood Playing Cards - Heart Suit is almost complete but it is just needing a few more cards that I haven’t found shapes for. Any help or suggestions of suitable number-shapes to represent the cards - “Hollywood Hearts theme” would be most welcome. If you (or anyone else on the forum) can add to the existing card images I already have if they can think of stronger images, then please share. Also, more importantly if anyone can think of card images for any of the following cards I’m still needing to find, please let me know. The card images I’m needing are:

6 of Hearts
J of Hearts
K of Hearts

Here goes my Hollywood Suit of Hearts that I already have images for:

As all images are based solely on the ‘number-shaper system’, the playing cards each represented should be quite self-explanatory and should need no further explanations to be made.

Post script:
How could I forget the obvious JH which is Charlie Chaplin’s cane! You won’t find anything quite as bizarre as the video clip below on the internet. It immediately made me think of Chaplin’s cane for the JH!

Its much different to use body parts as loci where you stage a scene vs. using them as the “objects” that are manipulated as an encoding element. I see zero issue with using them in both ways. You can have a tree as a loci and a tree as an object, both effective. You can even have the tree object as part of a scene at the tree loci and have no conflict or confusion.

Again, the goal for me with introducing the system to someone else is consistency. Everything is visually shaped-based and language independent. There is no H on the hearts cards. Heart is an english word, so many non-english speakers would likely not see the connection between the spelling of their word for heart and the h in “hollywood.” For example, in Spanish, heart is “corazón.” In French, “cœur.” In Chinese, “Xīn.” In Arabic it is “Qalb.” There are no H’s there to make a connection to the H in Hollywood.

Obviously if it works for you, go for it! But in terms of teaching it to a wide audience, I’d pass on that connection.

6 of Hearts!!

I suppose you can use Ace of Diamonds as a private jet, like the one Elvis Presley had
