Im colorblind lol
Taking this in a different direction: associating colors to letters and numbers is helpful for a variety of memorization tasks, and not as applicable to others. I’m into verbatim and near verbatim memorization and it would certainly be helpful for word recall if I had the redundancy of an image and a color scheme mnemonic for each word I strive to recall.
Now this i coming from a person pretty ignorant of the research, but let’s reconsider some other types:
We’ve talked so far about Grapheme-Color Synesthesia(letters/numbers to color) and mentioned Chromesthesia(sounds to colors)
For grapheme-color, people already suggested word types, but I wonder if it would be efficient to organize sentence types by color. (That might be difficult to program!)
For Chronesthesia, some people have talked about it, one person above mentioned using it to learn guitar. (Training this require colors to display during audio. Music is one thing, how about speech. Can we hook up a color displaying program to a speech to text software and have it run while listening to podcasts? Seeing words as a composite of colors sounds interesting)
Ordinal Linguistic Personification
@wayweary I think mentioned words having emotions from the colors he was seeing. This form of Synesthesia is often paired with grapheme-color, which means that maybe most of us are already born with color-emotion Synesthesia? (Can’t think of anyway to rain this or any particular reason you’d want to play with your own mental state)
Spatial Sequence Synesthesia
Now this is fascinating! Do any of you have implicit ordering of certain types of information! Do you always put number 5 in the far left corner of a room, or organize your alphabet pegs in spirals?(training this seems the most attainable for those on the site, as anyone can habitually store certain types of information in the same positional patterns each time they encode memories)
Mirror-Touch Synesthesia
Mentioned earlier. I’ve heard of some forms of empathy training. Whether it’s sensitivity training or hypnosis or meditation, I wonder if any of these reach a synesthetic level of success.
Auditory-Tactile Synesthesia
Sound to touch-sensation. (I was thinking about getting something like a board with various distinct tactile sensations that I could feel as I used my memory palace. Eventually I wouldn’t need the board, or at least that’s the case with lukasas)
Number Form Synesthesia
Sounds similar to spatial Sequence, I can’t tell the difference, except this is specific to numbers
Lexical-Gustatory (And Sound-Gustatory) Synesthesia
Well this sounds like the kind of training I can get behind! Even if it fails! But tasting sweets after sours after bitters might not be 100% pleasant.
Please send synesthesia trianing I want to see if I can train my synesthesia to a new level.
I get that this was an experiment to explore the nature of synesthesia but, in general, why would you train yourself to do this? Especially with letters. We don’t spell out individual letters, we read words as a whole and distinguishing individual letters would be a hindrance IMO. Something like reading a very ornate script.
My mother was strongly synesthetic. I am mildly so. But apart from experiencing the world a bit differently from most, I am not aware that it endowed either of us with cognitive advantages. True, my mom was a gifted artist and doubtless this was a factor in her imagination but most artists are not synesthetic.
I get the sense that, like lucid dreaming, acquiring this ability seems to promise access to a special knowledge or wisdom. It’s just a variation on the common sensory experience that everybody shares.
In real synesthesia, the additional sensations are inherent properties of the object itself - like the color of a lemon, the color of a musical note says something about the note itself. This is a very different thing from training oneself, like a Pavlovian dog, to associate an arbitrary additional sensation with some sensory experience. One could train oneself to hear Beethoven’s 9th everytime one picks up the dog’s bowl. What does that bring - other than an annoying distraction?
Actually, I have done something similar with numeric digits. Struggling to keep track of positions while doing mental math, I decided to color code their positions using the Resistor Band codes. Thus the units are black, the tens brown, the hundreds are red etc.
Because I am a proud eye there and I want to be more of who I am I find in my case I make associations with numbers not letters for some reason I’d love to be able to do it with both. My father and mother both synesthesia case’s and both savants with high IQ scores and alot of academic artistic talent. I want to be more like my father and mother. My synthetic abilities have been damaged I still have glimpse of cromosthesisa and number color sythesaia . But I want my mind back I want to be my self again. When I was in my 20s I was almost intirly synthetic now mildly so do you brain damage after an asult happened to me. A bowl to the head took most of my self away.
I used to be good at typing now I suck I want my brain back
I had it but now it’s gone
Evenry time I hear a sharp flash I see a flash of light that takes a cooler and I can’t help but see color numbers when l listen to music 4 is purple 3is yellow and so on. I also have a different perspective on time we’re I feel a flow to numbers when I’m really doing math well and it becomes a symphony of colors and music and number I can feel in my body li a shock going through my spine and shapes a grid at also visible. When I do math. I am very proud of my sythesaia of which I scored a 98 were most synthetic abilities score 90. I want to make this 100 or More so a new level of synetheia
