Also known as the shaper system. Those are not synesthetic images.
You are going to make a 3 digit number system even though you have aphantasia and can’t visualise images in your mind? And won’t your synesthesia get in the way of your mnemonics? To be honest I am very sceptical of both of your claims
Still not synesthesia.
Not really sure what you’re trying to say with this, but synesthesia cannot be learned, it is uncontrollable stimulation of the senses. Totally different to memory systems where converting the number into an image is a deliberate process.
Do not be sad Daniel, this is not the end of your progress. Even the best players like Andrea, Alex, Katie etc make errors. You will continue to do amazing things and even blow past this.
those are synesthetic images because when i see for example 17 this is a light and most of the time i see this number covered by a yellow color
Most of the time? Not synesthesia.
Synesthesia is all the time, every time, everywhere.
Yes, absolutely there is no debating that. Most mnemonists on this forum are probably somewhere close to that level where they can instantly recognise the image after looking at a number. Still not synesthesia though, which is what @fogelmemory is claiming he has.
when you will get inside my brain and watch exactly how I see numbers then you will be able to tell me what I have. nobody here is a doctor or tested my brain but you can think whatever you want I don’t really care
I began thinking he was describing synesthesia with this post from over 2 weeks ago. This really just sounds like synesthesia to me - he says the digits are covered in colours with a unique sound.
I think you are correct with this. Fogel is a phenomenal mnemonist, but it seems likely that he may have misunderstood the definition of synesthesia and convinced himself he has it, either that or he is just pretending. Especially since he talks about using a PAO system and developing a 3 digit one.
when i play with ppl in ml many times they say i dont have more places to play because they have images on there but for me its doesn’t matter i can play in the same places non-stop without waiting that the images will be deleted from my mind because i dont see images inside my mind that’s what lead me to think that i have synesthesia + Aphantasia . i think i have synesthesia because when i see numbers on screen i see shapes that reminds me pictures but i see that on the screen and not like im dreaming at night also sometimes i see the numbers with colors like when i see 07 i see the number covered on white color and when i see 08 i feel like someone is praying i also use my inner voices to remember the stories. i don’t really know what i have but trust me im not faking anything if i want to fake i would cheat on ml
one thing is for sure 9 years ago i have been diagnosed with schizophrenia and ocd since then i take many diffrenet meds and it makes my life like a nightmare next time when i see my doctor if he has a time i will try explain him what happens when i memorize numbers and cards maybe he can give me some answers. anyway when i play in ml on the images event my results are much less than others because i cant use memory palace for this event so for every image i tell a story and thats how i remember images in order. last thing i want to tell sometimes i see the numbers moving on the screen for example 23 is my friend and 49 is a horse and if see this mix of numbers sometimes i see and feel the numbers moving on the screen. my mind always plays trick on me on the cards and numbers event i cant even explain that
Guess I will recommend again Synesthesia by Cytowic mit press essential knowledge series. Reading the book can really help with this discussion.
See, the thing is synesthesia is something you are either born with or get through an accident.
When I was a kid my feelings for numbers was already there. My synesthesia was already there, all the time, every time since.
So, you either had an accident you don’t know of or you don’t have synesthesia.
My answer is you don’t have synesthesia.
This doesn’t make sense. How can you be born feeling numbers. Numbers are only seen after a few years of your life. That is after birth.
What is your source for
synesthesia is something you are either born with or get through an accident.
I am interested.
There is an interesting thread on this forum regarding a “synesthesia training program” which is worth a read.
Yeah, it probably isn’t something you’re “born with” per se. But it is probably developed very young.
From wikepedia:
" Little is known about how synesthesia develops. It has been suggested that synesthesia develops during childhood when children are intensively engaged with abstract concepts for the first time. "
I did this video few minutes ago. Here I memorized 40 random digits at a rate of half a second per number. when I closed my eyes I saw dark places and I also saw digits as they look like in the reality but the shapes of the digits are always remind me pictures I wish I could explain that to everyone. anyway I think my recall time was ■■■■■■■ crazy ![]()
But it is probably developed very young.
“Little is known about how synaesthesia develops”
This is what I thought.
My opinion is that it is developed most probably in the critical period.
From Wikipedia:
critical period is a maturational stage in the lifespan of an organism during which the nervous system is especially sensitive to certain environmental stimuli
Critical periods of plasticity occur in the prenatal brain and continue throughout childhood until adolescence and are very limited during adulthood
This means you can develop synaesthesia as an adult. That is because plasticity does not end as an adult. But it will be very difficult as an adult because critical periods will be limited.

6- to 7-year-old synesthetes have consistent color associations with approximately 35% of letters, which increases to approximately 70% by ages 10–11. Thus there is a period of at least 4 years during which these synesthetic associations are in flux.
Interestingly, not a single one of 615 participants had perfectly stable letter–color associations, a fact that should make us question the common claim of synesthetes that letter colors are fixed “from infancy” or “as long as I can remember” It appears that the color evoked by a letter in adulthood is experienced as the color that L has “always been,” but these memories are not always accurate.
Synesthesia often develops slowly, into late childhood.
