Post your 0-99 List here for other people to use... feel free to add

I decided to start a thread called “Post Your -99 List” to possibly save some people some time and hassle in trying to complete their list. A far as I know almost everyone is trying to improve upon what they have and can use a little help. A perfect example was last week when someone mentiond offhand a few off their PAO list and I thought “Damn, I could use a couple of those because my AD (14) was just not working for me.” Thus my new 14 is ADele holding a Grammy.

Thanks for posting the list. I linked to this thread from the Major System page so that new users can find it.

Great post WJW & Doublehelix

I have attached my PAO list (explicit) based on the Major System along with my memory palace I created to remember all of them.
For anyone just starting out I found linking this list to the journey / palace method a really easy way to get them down quickly.

I really like the idea of sharing ideas on the forum good work

Much like richomagic, my PAO list uses major system words exclusively.

Hi jbaber!

Welcome to the forum & great list I think it will really help people starting out with their PAOs. Like you I found it much easier to have the first name have both digits encoded as opposed to one for the first and one for the last name.

Below is a Dominic list I copied from another active thread here on the board. Thanks to shougo.

You’re welcome  I actually clicked on this post to copy my list and was delighted that you had already done so!

The link is dead. Can you please post it again as a google sheets link

Hey, I really like the idea of one thread where everyone puts their 0-99 list. It has been really helpful looking at other peoples’ while I’ve been creating mine. I’ve only done the “P” of my PAO so far, but thought I would share what I have, and edit it later to add my “A” and “O”.

Also, @Josh maybe we could make an effort to collect all the 00-99 list links, along with the handy generation software, across the site? I know there are a couple of places where it is aggregated (for example, this great post you made: https://artofmemory.com/wiki/PAO_System_Examples/ , which really helped me!). Or maybe just a new category in the forum software? It feels a little specific for a category, but maybe a tag “0-99 list?”, or “number->image” list? Just cause the “Major system” and “PAO system” tags capture a lot when you’re just surfing the site for lists of numbers to get an idea!

Good idea. I’ve created a tag called number-image-lists and will add it to some topics.

There are also some ideas in the number-images section, but those topics are for individual numbers.

How are you coding your Tens, Jacks, Queens and Kings?
I understand for 1 or (Ace) through to Nine you are using a code of: 1 = Spade (1 Point), 2 = Heart (2 chambers), 3 = Clubs (3 Flowers) and 4 = Diamonds (4 Points) for the Suits and a normal Major System encoding for the card values but your coding for Tens, Jacks, Queens and Kings is confusing me??

10’s get the “0,” S/Z sound, 10 of Clubs is SaMMy.

For Face cards, the structure is reversed and the suit gives the 10’s place sound.
Jacks give J/SH/CH (Jack starts with J sound)
Kings give K/G (King starts with K sound)
Queens give F/V (Cliche “female form” is hourglass 8.)

Jack of Clubs is MaCHo: M for clubs, CH for Jack.

This way for all number cards (3/4 of the deck) you can simply read them. AS TeD, 2S aNDy… etc. The only mental adjustment is on the face cards where you read the suit first to give your word.

Tim I’ve never really been much good at learning memory palaces in the physical sense of the word. Looking at your LOCATIONS given above that following the Major Systems encoding, would it be a good idea going from 1 - 99 or uTah to PuB acting as my memory palace? Let’s say I was wanting to memorize the sequence of 300 randomly shuffled playing cards using a Dominic’s PAO system as an example. Assume I have 4 of Spades, Ace of Hearts and an 8 of Diamonds as my first 3 card sequence which translates into: Donna Summer, Sieg-Heiling or (Nazi-Saluting) a Wall = PAO = Donna Summer (Person), Adolf Hitler’s (Action), Humpty Dumpty’s (Object). I could place the image of Donna Summer Seig-Heiling on top of a Wall in uTah mountains. Thereafter, I could traverse to each of your LOCATIONS in turn finally ending up at your LOCATION for #99 being PuB, where I could place the last 3 card sequence to be remembered. Any thoughts on this please? The problem I have with MEMORY PALACES is the difficulty of remembering which one represents what position or number. But with your LOCATION keywords, I would have no problem in say remembering that an Ace of Spades, 2 of Clubs and King of Hearts were interacting in position #95 in a PooL. The image I have at the PooL (location 95) using my Dominic PAO System for memorizing playing cards translates into: Arnold Schwarzenegger, unicycle peddling, in Blue Suede shoes around the PooL (#95) - most memorable!! The only drawback as I see it is that I would be combining both Major Systems for location peg words and Dominic Systems for playing cards not sure if that would pose any problems?? Thanks for sharing your Major PAAO System.

You definitely could… That would be a type of peg list as opposed to a memory palace in the classic sense. Instead of making a connection to an item or person, you’re using the locations to remind you of position number.

The problem I see with using it that way is that you still need to decode the location into the number that it represents, so that will take extra time and brain power…

With a classic memory palace route, you typically don’t get the advantage of being able to do random access on location numbers, but because the path flows naturally you spend little to no effort navigating and moving from one loci to the next. One less task for your brain to spend energy on during memorizing and during recall.

There is no immediately apparent connection to the order of my 00-99 location pegs, other than they follow the major system, and you’d still need to spend a lot of time building instant association for the numbers to their locations. It’s likely more time-efficient to build a sturdy palace journey of 10 main areas with 10 loci per area that have a natural progression. If you crafted the areas and loci carefully enough it would still allow you to jump to a specific number if you needed that random access feature, you just need a little math.

From your example: say you want the card number for unicycle peddling, that’s happening in the pool, you still need to decode “pool” to location 95… then take 95 x 3 = 285, so that loci contains cards 283-284-285. The action is the 2nd thing, so the card that unicycle peddling represents is the 284th card in the stack.

Is this faster than via memory palace, by remembering that the unicycling is happening say on the nightstand in your bedroom, then remembering your bedroom is the 9th area in your palace and the nightstand is the 5th loci in that area to determine the location number is 95? Probably, but the tradeoff is the time spent creating the location associations and flowing through them during memorizing. You’ll need to be able to make the jump from uTah to an iNN, to Maui, to Rio, to an aLLey, and on and on in order or you’ll lose time and get distracted in the memorzing phase. With enough familiarity with the classic palace, you’d probably end up with similar speed in recall when jumping through areas to get your position number determined with the bonus of an intuitive, low-brainpower-cost path to follow during memorizing.

In practicality though, outside of some card magic applications where you need to know the position number of every card and the card for every position number, I’m not sure there’s very many applications where you’d need to be able to random access a card position that quickly? For short-term competition style application, it probably is more workload than its worth as you’d never really have a reason to go back and say ooh, what was the 164th card in that pile?

For more long-term retention goals, say memorizing the U.S. presidents and which president number they were, you’d probably be better off encoding the number as an object or adjective element to their image… like James Buchanon has a bushy TaiL, or he looks very very TaLL because he was the 15th president, rather than placing James Buchanon at the DeLi and then having to remember who was at the deli. If you burn in a long-term association between a location and a thing, I’d think it would be very difficult to reuse that location as when you were asked “who is at the deli” your first instinct would be to recall James Buchanon. I could definitely be wrong though!

As far as mixing systems… I don’t think it matters too much, but again its more overhead for your brain to dig through when encoding and recalling. Would there be a way to code locations in similar fashion with the Dominic system phonetics so that you’re sticking with a single decoder ring? Instead of using it to generate initials, could it generate the phonetics for words, so AS could be ASgard vs Adraitic Sea? I’m not very familiar with Dominic construction.

You could always switch everything to Major System based card images! They write themselves! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I was thinking the very same thing. Scrap Dominic System for cards and just be consistent in using the Major System. I could use the “Human Tim System” as it’s ready made but to be honest some of the things in it don’t make sense to me. For instance:

Locations: 9 = Powow; 24 = NoiR (film); 33 = Moma; 36 MaCHu (picchu); 52 = LeNNy (and Joes); 62 = JaBBa’s (palace); 73 = CoMicon; 75 = GoLgotha; 93 = BaMa (sideline); 97 = PaCKy (I would have to replace all of the afore mentioned LOCATIONS as they honestly mean nothing to me??

I’m guessing also looking over your PAAO that again 80% make sense to me but I would need to replace 20% to make the system work well for me.

Thank you for your very thorough and informed response to my query.

Some of these are local landmarks for me, some are tied to movies or events that hold personal significance. You gotta find what fits instinctually for you. It will always stick better if you let your brain make the connections and don’t lean too hard on the crutch of pre-made imagery!

Besides, even if you don’t end up adopting it, its a fun mental exercise to try to fill out the grid!
