PAO - cards coding question

First of all it’s my first post, so hi guys! Great to be here

I’m just starting to use mnemonics and after reading several books feel somewhat confused. Because there are different suggestions for coding cards. So if anyone would be so kind to help me clarify one think that will be awesome. (and if this question was discussed please don’t scream and maybe kindly reply with a link)

I’m thinking about learning cards with PAO…
I have 100 people+actions+objects coded and remembered.
Is it a good idea to use the same PAO’s I use for everything else to code cards or is it (for some reason) a bad idea.

For example let’s say I want to code Spades from 11: Ace of Spades as 11, 2 of Spades as 12, 3 of Spades as 13 and so on… Diamonds from 31: Ace of Diamonds as 11, 2 of Diamonds as 12… And Clubs from 51 and Hearts from 81…

In my PAO number 11 is Amy Adams, 12 is Anne Boleyn, 13 is Al Capone and so on…
Should I use people (and actions, and objects) from this (let’s call it) normal PAO or should I produce and use totally different PAO just for remembering cards. And if YES/NO, why? I don’t want to make a cardinal mistake and if I can avoid it why shouldn’t I?

So that was problem number 1.

Second question? Is PAO a good system to learn speed deck? I know that Ben System is probably the best when we take the speed of memorizing but it’s time consuming and my dream goal is to learn a deck of cards in less than 1 minute (not under 20 seconds). Is there a better way when we take into consideration possible results/time required to learn the system? If YES, what do you propose?

Thanks a lot,
Kuba

No, you don’t need a new system for cards. There’s no reason at all to do that.

Yes, PAO is great for speed cards.

Thank you very much QiJitsu

So I should:

  1. Stay with my PAO coding from OO to 99.
  2. Choose starting numbers for different suits (for example: Spades from 11 to 23; Diamonds from 31 to 44 and so on…)
  3. Learn them perfectly (of course  )

I was thinking that choosing different coding for cards would give me faster times because I could simplify it. For example all Hearts would be beautiful women, all Diamonds rich Woman, all Spades would be male actors, all Clubs - male anti-heroes
This way I all red cards would be women (beautiful - Hearts and rich - Diamonds), all black would be men (actors - Spades and anti-heroes - Clubs). I was thinking, that this - if learned well - would give me faster recollections from memory then my normal PAO coding (because of less variables).

But this is just theory. What’s your experience? If there is no need to code and learn cards with new associations I would not do this and I would just concentrate be as efficient with my normal PAO as possible.

I’ll be glad for any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

I used categories for each suit as you mentioned. Diamonds = rich people/actors, Spades = cartoon characters or fictional movie characters, Hearts = friends & family, Clubs = Sports Stars. I find it very helpful to be able to use this system as I’m more sure of my image being correct as I’m very new to this. Perhaps it’s worth the time/effort to create new images especially if you’re taking it seriously which it seems that you are. Good luck!

Does anyone knows if any good players use a different/distinct PAO for cards than for other kinds of memorization?

Oh. And I just found one minus of using same standard PAO for cards. Some cards (ie. Queen of Hearts) are female, but their corresponding number in my standard PAO is male (Queen of Hearts = 32 = Christian Bale). And that sex difference slows recollection of an image (or at least I think it could). Did you have such problems when creating your PAO?

Please share and give me some tips. And tell me what your PB for a deck of cards is.

Peace,
Kuba

Well, maybe there is no such different for a short-term discipline. The main problem is to keep training. The best record of PAO is 12 sec and even one card system is 13 sec. So perhaps, you should find some encouragement or companies to make sure you still keep on the track.

Well if you want to you can. Will it ultimately be faster? I doubt it, but I never tried so it’s not like I can compare or show you are peer-reviewed study. If you convert your cards to numbers then it will be like every time you’re doing cards you’re getting extra practice on those numbers, and every time you practice numbers you are getting extra practice on the cards whenever their number comes up. So, I feel like having your cards based on your number system is complimentary to each other. It also saves you time so can start practicing your cards sooner.

Careful with the terminology. PAO is a 1-card system. Do you mean someone got 13 seconds with a card system where each card only has 1 potential image (compared to PAO which has 3 potential images per card)?

That’s just you’re own preconception slowing you down. Get rid of that preconception and keep training and it shouldn’t make any difference in the long run.

You right. Just one card with one potential images, only 52 images in card system, and put two images in one loci. The record was created by Lujian Zou 2017 Shenzhen, 13.956 sec.

Thats a great observation. Thanks a lot.

Wow! I’m amazed. :scream:

OK, I’ve got another question. Are my Action-Objects specific enough?
For example:

  • Gary Sinisie - driving wheelchair - wheelchair
  • Orlango Bloom - shooting a bow - bow

Some of my actions and objects seems to similar. Am I right or wrong?

  1. Wouldn’t it matter for my memory or not (because if I use actioon (shooting a bow), the bow itself won’t be anywhere later in the story?
  2. Would it matter, because it would be too easy to confuse acion (shooting a bow) with object (bow) while recollectijg from memory?

What’s your experience?

Will be grateful for any tips :relaxed:

@Kuba
In my opinion,
it only matters if u get a object “bow” tgt with shooting. So make sure if u don’t hold shooting and bow in ur system, there is no confusion can be made accidentally.

OK. So I have shooting a bow-bow with Orlando Bloon (02) and shooting winchester-target with Annie Oakley (10). Is it distinct enough or not?

To enhance ur mind vision, u can always do it in this way. Start open a folder, called PAO, and then goto Google do ur researches, find a suitable gif or jpg that can conceptualize ur peg.
And about ur questions, I can’t tell whether it is concreate or not. That’s the thing only u can tell when u feel content of it.
I can show u my example folder like this: a b c is the same as person action and object and the others are just mind map or mind route .

@Kuba Do I answered ur question?

As good as possible. I hope that shooting a bow (the move of an arm backwards) is different from shooting a rifle. But only time, practice and experience will tell.

also this is a very cool video clip that bring mind activities into reality.

Thanks. That’s awesome

Another question, about Actions and Objects:

Is it OK to have sth linke that

  • Albert Einstein - writing on a chalkboard - chalkboard
    or should it rather be
  • Albert Einstein - writing - chalkboard
    or
Albert Einstein - showing a toungue (famous photo) - chalkboard (obvious object)

or another example:

  • Clive Owem - eatiing a carrot - a carrot
    or
  • Clive Owen - eating - a carrot
    or
  • Clive Owen - shooting (from movie Shoot 'Em Up) - eating a carrot (scene from that movie)
  1. So the first type of A-O pair is the easiest to momorize and fastest to associate, but is it distinct enough? (this is what I would preferably use if there is no chance of making a huge mistake when momorizing)
  2. The second type clearly distinguishes action and object, but then action seems to be too general.
  3. And the third one have totally different action and different object. It’s more of Person - Action Object -Action. There is no chance of making make a mistake, but it’s hardest to learn and slowest to recollect from memory.

I’ve seen many PAO lists and most of the time it’s the first type. Does it mean it’s the best one and there is no real danger, because our memory will clearly be able to distinguish when remembering if if was an action (writing on a chalkboard) or object (chalkboard)?

Which type do you use? Which one do you think is the best? And why?

Thanks again for any help.
