I’m using a method for reviewing chosen mental images for my 2-card/3-digit system (see Adventures with a 2-card system), which I’m enjoying and I’d like to share. Essentially I’ve chosen 14 points on my body to ‘locate’ images when I’m reviewing them. I’ve organised the syllable-based images in roughly alphabetical order and I place 1-2 images at each locus point on my body, in the same way each time, so that, for example, images for syllables ending with -ik or -il will always be placed on my left elbow, aiding recall.
Giving the example of syllables starting with ‘da’ and ‘dA’ (“day”), I am placing these as follows:
Head: da-
Left shoulder: daf, daj
Left elbow: dak, dal
Left hand: dam, dan
Right shoulder: dad, dag
Right elbow: dap, dar
Right hand: das, dat
Groin: dA-
Left buttock: dAf, dAj
Left knee: dAk, dAl
Left foot: dAm, dAn
Right buttock: dAd, dAg
Right knee: dAp, dAr
Right foot: dAs, dAt
I then use the same loci for the syllables ‘de’ and ‘dE’ (“dee”), and on through my other syllable-images.
I also find that pairing most of my images in this way aids recall of specific images. For example, at my left shoulder I visualise Daffy Duck petting a daschund; if I’m struggling to recall my image for ‘daj’ (a daschund) then my image for ‘daf’ (Daffy Duck) helps me to get there. And I always know where they’ll be when I need to locate them - my left shoulder!
I’d be interested to know how others use body memory palaces for any purpose, how effective and reusable they find these, how many loci they find they’re able to use on the body, etc. ![]()
