Should I buy Jim Kwik's $247 Speed Reading Masterclass?

The guy seems to work at a professional level and I see him everywhere so that means he has to be legit right? However, $247 is a lot of money and I can’t find any reviews of any kind about his classes which is to me, very suspicious. I haven’t seen anything about him being a fraud, like AT ALL.
Any response would be appreciated, I feel like this is a high risk high reward decision.

I’ve never done any speed reading courses, so I’m not sure. You might want to search the forum for “speed reading” to find other discussions about that topic in general (like Does Speed-reading Work? and speed reading).

I have taken a few courses and used a few pieces of speed reading software. The only two techniques that ended up working are:

1.) always read with a pointer (your finger or pen). This prevents mindless backtracking.

2.) Use a stop watch (or egg timer). See how fast you can read 10 pages. Then re-read those pages again and see how good your comprehension actually was. Sometimes I will do this every 50 pages in a non-fiction book. Although these days I like to read on the Kindle. This technique does not work well with Kindle books. It is better suited for paper books.

I think reading speed probably tops out at about 4x your speaking voice speed. I can understand spoken English at about 3.1x speed (that is what I listen to all YouTube videos at). If, when reading, I don’t sub-vocalize pronouns, articles etc. My speed then jumps a bit more. You will always be limited by sub-vocalizing key words.

I tried it, and didn’t like it. I was unable to get a refund.

I enjoyed Jim’s podcast, and thought I’d try his course. From the podcast and email ads, I got the impression that the methods in the course would be fully grounded in science. But, it turns out that the course is based on Jim’s personal experience and beliefs. And don’t get me wrong, he seems like a great guy who wants to help people learn more effectively. What I found unfortunate is that the materials do not match the current scientific knowledge base of learning, teaching, and memory. So, you’re paying for “tips that worked for Jim.”

Some things he teaches have reasonable evidence showing no effect. Additionally, some things he teaches are not possible according to our current understanding of the human body. E.g. reading in your peripheral vision. Additionally vocalization (saying it), and sub-vocalizing (thinking it discursively) both increase comprehension.

Regarding speed reading in general, it may be possible to increase your reading speed, but comprehension and recall require “depth of processing.” Basically, the easier and faster something seems the less valuable it is for a “student.”

I think speed reading is something people want to work. Who wouldn’t want to read at a thousand words per minute? Because of that, we’ll keep seeing people selling a method. However, I doubt that people can read much faster than they can talk or hear without significant drops in comprehension.

Sorry for the late reply on this, as I just saw this thread and joined this forum around a month ago.

I believe a few google searches show that its very hard to get refunds for any of Jim Kwik’s products. I remember I wanted to purchase, however a little voice in my head advised me to look first and I did and that is what I found.

FYI, he does do a free podcast which I do find valuable, however its typically him interviewing others and they plugging their products.

The only speed reading technique I know is to see sentences forming the image, a story in a decent paragraph without any sub vocalisation. You must see instead of read.

Sorry for late reply Jason.
I have read the rest of the replies and i am adding in my experience.

I haven’t bought Jim Kwik program. However, i am abit familiar with speed reading.
I am currently able to read over 2000 words in a minute.

So how did i do it? i learnt it by reading and practicing the drills from this book:

Breakthrough Rapid Reading by Peter Kump.

You can check amazon for this book.
I had a message from this forum that said i can’t include links.

But if you will google: Breakthrough Rapid Reading Pdf, you will be able to read this book for free.

My experience: its alot of hardwork learning to speed read. i spent about an hour everyday for 4-5 months doing the drills. This book has lotsa drills.

Be prepared to work hard. At least 20min a day.
i was able to increase my speed in 1week. However i wanted to be able to improve myself. so i took abit longer time.

Hope this helps…

Hi Moo, I was also looking at doing some of Jim’s courses including the speed reading one. Did they say why they wouldn’t you a refund? his website says “30 money back guarantee”
I was hoping to try the course and if not for me to claim my payment back within the 30 days. What do you think?

Hey Jaqueline1,
Actually, all memory programs are about the same.

FYI, you can get these books in the internet for free.

Trying typing these

Mega Memory PDF by Kevin Trudeau
Super power memory pdf by Harry Lorayne
Memory book pdf by Harry Lorayne

All these are free in the internet…

I have also bought Howard Berg’s Memory Genius.
Honestly, there isn’t much difference…

It’s about discipline and practicing the skills until you can do it.

Hope this helps.

Hi Adrian, Thanks for your input. I am really a novice to Memory Improvement and Speed Reading. I did a course “Motivate your Memory” by Timothy Hyde that was only $13 on Udemy.
I kind of like videos for the coaching as I get overwhelmed reading tons of info, I am not very good at speed reading yet. I noticed there is websites that offer heavily discounted MindValley and Jim Kwik’s courses. Have you heard of these? I will be posting a question on this forum as well.

Jacqueline,

For your infor, i am able also to speedread at over 1000 words a minute.
For subjects that i am familiar, i am able to speed read up to over 3,000 words a minute.

The reason i am able to do it is bec i learnt it from this book:
Breakthrough Rapid Reading by Peter Kump.

U can actually get this book for free.

Just google:
Breakthrough Rapid Reading by Peter Kump pdf

Here is the key: do all the drills like an obedient little child.
i did the drills almost everyday for over 4 months.

(Yes, it does take effort. What you put in, will be what you get out of it).

When you do the drills, set aside your ego and just do it.
It feels mindless using your finger to underline every statement so fast until you can’t read it.

However, as you keep doing it, one day you will discover that you are able to read at that speed!

Currently, i am able to read at less than 10 seconds a page. If i am fast, i can go at 3 seconds.

So go ahead…try out the book. Just be prepared for lotsa hard work!

Blessings!

Same case here. I bought, didnt like it and could not get a refund. I wish I had seen these reviews before.
Just like Moo mentions - the guy seems great and works with many famous people but his techniques that he is willing to teach in the course are not for everyone, in fact I finished the entire course and nothing. Then, I gave it another try for about 25 days and nothing. Save yourself some money and look for another alternatives. You will not get your money back on this.

Jim Kwik method is truly an effectin. But I do not think that it costs such money. It is much better for the same money to buy a Howard Berg course, which learned to read at a speed of 25,000 words per minute and reveals all its secrets during the course. With all due respect to Jim Kwik, he does not have exceptional achievements in the field of speed reading. After completing the course of Peter Kamp, the vast majority of his students reached the speed of 1000-1200 words per minute, which has Jim Kwik.

Hey, thank you so much for your feedback. I couldn’t find any courses for Peter Kamp, except his book. I will also work through some books but for the time being I actually rather learn from video coaching or audios.
I also checked out Howard Berg’s course, it’s really expensive and takes 7 weeks to complete. I actually ended up buying Jim Kwik’s for $97 as a special offer, I might get a refund and sign up for Howard Berg’s course. I love this community you guys are great!
