@Simon: Regarding improving things in the future:
I think you might do yourself a favor to add some automatism / formulas to the League table system. So that if a score of a game is added, both competitors will be getting +1 on played matches. If a>b Player a will get a win, player b will get a loss. If a=b, both will get a draw. The score automatically added to for and against. The difference as a formula of For - Against… I had the impression that at least some of those you had to do manually, Simon. I’m not a programer, but things like that work in Excel, so I assume they can be programmed as well. And it might be a bunch of work in the beginning, but once done for a single table, you probably can copy and paste most of it to the other tables including for future seasons. So I believe it would put some workload off your shoulders. What do you think about that? Maybe we could even try an automized score input where a score get’s automatically added to the table when 1. competitor A has put in the score and then 2. competitor B has confirmed the score. But that should be an additional option only, as I wouldn’t want to rely on competitors to do that every time. However, it also could put workload off your shoulders in the middle-long run while also giving both competitors the opportunity to update the table themselves as they might be eager to look at the new situation without having to calculate.

Thanks to everyone who took part in season 8 of the Online Memory League Championship.
As you may have seen, the division 1 final between Simon Reinhard and Andrea Muzii is scheduled for this weekend at 2020-07-18T15:00:00Z. It should be a great match to watch, and it will be commentated live by former world champion Johannes Mallow. Just click the orange “Live” label on the Memory League home page at the appropriate time to watch.
After the final is finished, we will open up registration for season 9. When registration is open, I will post here in the forum and put a message on the ML home page. To be eligible to play in season 9, you must have played at least 5 rated games in each event.

Would propose that we already make it clear at the start of season 9 that the finals will have the same rules as season 8.
Also, just an idea: Since we did not have national Names at the Remote tournament (and since I am not entirely sure all national Names databases have the same size or distribution, making it also unclear whether there are some built-in inequalities there), how about we try a season with only International Names? I assume that live ML tournaments in the future will also only have International Names, so people could get used to that.

Since International Names are added to ml there are 3 disciplines that require system : numbers, cards and names. Words, images and International names are three non system events. I included national names into system event because since there is limited number of names you can prepare for each of them and also if you forget you can quickly go through names in your mind and find missing one. If we remove names there is imbalance. So instead of removing names from competition I would ask to add binary digits to have same number of events that are based on system and not.
Mr Orton, I played only one rated game in International Names so far.
Does it mean I must play 4 more rated games of International Names to be eligible to enter for season 9?
I don’t mind doing that but it just feels a bit strange.
I feel too that the national names event is tricky to maintain completely fair. I do like this event and I’ve spent a fair amount of time training for it before international names were introduced. I’m all for removing the national names from the league seasons. We tried that a couple of seasons ago but reverted back to allowing national names after some competitors complained.
I’d also be in favor of having slightly larger divisions and removing people who haven’t played a match or responded to requests or marked availability 2-3 weeks into the season.

Hi Jan, I would also include Images into your “system” category because many people know all or almost all of the images and can prepare for the event like for Names. So, there already is an imbalance according to your logic which would be reduced by taking out Names. 
My rationale was just mainly that it might not be part of the next official tournaments, so not including it into the League (or trying this out for a season) might make it more realistic. Just a proposal, of course :).
Yes, I agree, Sylvain. It is not easy for the Names category to be sure that each national set has the same difficulty.
For example, I remember I checked out a national Names category about two years ago to see whether it might make sense to switch to it from English. But I soon noticed during training that the same names were coming again, much more often than with English, and often one name was repeated in almost each set … Needless to say, that made it much easier. I notified Simon Orton and I heard that (at least back then) the names of that set were somehow weighted according to real life frequency. It then became clear that I would not switch to this language category for the national Names in competition because it seemed easier than English, and I kept using English names.
I do not know if that or similar things still persist with other languages, but it underscores that the national Names event might be hard to keep comparable, as Sylvain has written above.
To be clear: Simon Orton is doing such a fantastic job and it is really sooo great what Memory League has become :). And the proposal to do season 9 without national Names is just to test how that feels in practice. Season 10 will probably come very soon after that, so it would not be a permanent change anyway.
I think one of the biggest advantages of the ML format is that it’s quite beginner friendly. The journeys are shorter and you don’t have to achieve perfect or near perfect recall like in traditional disciplines. By allowing only international names you would give away a part of this advantage because they are way more difficult. The bar for potential new players would be higher. On the other hand it’s understandable that people are concerned about fairness, especially in higher divisions. Maybe still allow national names in lower divisions in order to motivate people to join?
