I hope that by writing down the things I memorized, I can motivate myself to get better!
This is what I did today:
Memorized half of the periodic table in 23 minutes.
Learned all the flags and their respective countries in 50 minutes.
Read 30 pages in a history book (but I can’t estimate what is important to memorize and what is not, so some pages took way too long while others I memorized in 1-2 minutes).
Started memorizing the 100 most important people in history (excluding famous ones) and what they did. I’m having some trouble with difficult names like Ibn al-Haytham (965–1040 A.D.) and Al-Khwarizmi (780–850 A.D.).
I also want to start with coding but that has nothing to do with memory
Sounds like its been a very productive day for you! Concerning Ibn Al-Haytham I’d probably imagine one one the enormous IBM computers you could walk into. Weird ‘Al’ Yankovic is there throwing a bale of ‘Hay’ at it, which produced a ‘tham’ sound when hitting it (almost like an onomatopeia).
For Al-Kwarizmi I’d imagine the 'Alc’oholic guy from the Simpsons cartoon standing in front of me, which makes me gag and produce a ‘wa’ sound. He leans against the wall and tries to ‘rizz me’ up (flirt with me).
You’ll probably have different associations but these may help you get your gears turning.
Concerning coding and memory: You may want to check out Beau2am’s journal on this forum, which deals with memorizing the Python programming language’s documentation. For an application of computer science methodology to mnemonics, check out Joe Reddington’s ‘Advanced Memory Palaces’.
I finished memorizing the periodic tabel (last half so 60 element → 118) 19 min 31 sec
I got 6 wrong
I watched 2,5 h of a 15h long python course
started reading the book “How to solve it”
5 min numbers: I memorized 58 numbers (with the major system)
5 min words: I memorized 52 words
Challanges:
I speak German, swiss german, french, english, russian so when i try to memorize words from a nother language i automaticly combine pictures. Here an example: Lutetium is for me “Lut” swiss german for loud + “Etic” english.
I went through old memory palaces to see, how much I coud still remember
-197 flags of evry country i coud remember 190
-Evry element in the periodic tabel I forgot 6
-I again revisited what I learned in maths and coding
-last month I read 8 books so I revisited them
I finished memorizing the 100 historical figures (So what they did in theyre lifetime)
Today, I’m feeling motivated and eager to make progress. I’d appreciate any criticism of my plans—specifically, what I could improve, what I should avoid, and any other advice you might have.
Books: Continuing to read my current book and possibly starting a new one
Coding Guide: I’m currently 7.5 hours into a 15-hour coding guide, so I’m halfway through.
Speed Reading: I’m a very slow reader, so I’m focusing on improving my reading speed while maintaining comprehension.
Memorization Goals:
Memorizing content from my Physics textbook (from page 30 to page 100)
-First 30 min I did 18 Pages. -----then 8.5 min to review evrything
-Next 30 min I did 15 Pages (wow this was bad) -----then 8 min to review evrything
-Page 58 → 100 il do later today
In the end When I tried to explain evrything as detailed as possible and I think I did it quite detailled but i still forgot some things. But I have no idea if I was fast enough. I think i was quite slow. What do you think? What I also found is that its smarter to have formulas in a seperate memory palace. If you want i coud give an example on how a page looks like!
Memorizing poems verbatim
I memorized “Hoffnung” by Friederich Schiller
Goal 30 min did it in 16 min (also dont know if this is good)
Memory Training:
1 minute: Memorizing numbers= 26
5 minutes: Memorizing words= 58
5 minutes: Memorizing numbers= 62
I’m trying to “perfect” my techniques for learning large amounts of information and reducing the time it takes to acquire new skills. I think this is my main goal. I want to mamorize as many books, textbooks and in general information about physics, engeneering, coding, and science in general as possible! I’d love your feedback on how I can refine my approach. Thanks!!!
I suggest taking notes on the different little lessons you learn, so you can make them into warmup exercises, or more focused practice sessions.
That’s about what, 125 wpm on a dense subject that needs a lot of focus to get through? I wouldn’t say that’s bad at all, and even if it was try to accept it. The last thing you need is to get discouraged by expecting too much of yourself in the short term.
Honestly? I don’t know why you’re focused on speed to begin with. It sounds like you’re trying to build long term knowledge, not train to compete.
Detail and accuracy are my top priorities when it comes to learning. I’ve been training with memory techniques for the past 20 days, although I’ve been using the method of loci for the last six months specifically to learn vocabulary for school and to memorize various subjects. Despite this experience, I still find myself progressing slowly, and I’m not sure why. And the tip about coding is very helpful! Thanks
Memorize 200 didgets of e in 15 min: I did it in 14 and I have no idea how it is possible, that evry time i am memorizing 5 min random numbers my score is about 60. But here it means, that evry 5 min i memorized about 70 didgets and i have no idea how this is possible!
Memorized poem: I memorized “Der Baum” by Max Frisch and some other smaller ones. It took me 7 min to memorize “Der Baum”
I will Memorize Physiks book: Yesterday I didnt finish memorizing page58 → 100. I wont look at the watch this time and ill just try doing it as detailled as possible.
Tried speedreading: Currently i am 150 words per minute to understand 100% (Avrage is 200 ->300)
Coding Guide: I’m currently 9.5 hours into a 15-hour coding guide, so I’m halfway through.
Day 7:
Today, I flew to Cyprus, so I’m feeling a bit tired.
Tried Memorizing 100 Digits of Phi in 6 Minutes: I managed to memorize them in 7.5 minutes while on the plane, which I think is pretty good under the circumstances and with my level.
Memorizing Quotes: I successfully memorized quotes from famous individuals verbatim.
Physics Book Memorization: I still haven’t memorized pages 58 to 100, but I worked on it today without checking the time to avoid getting demotivated.
Coding Guide: Unfortunately, I didn’t make any progress on this today.
Books: I’m continuing to read my current book.
And I have a question, how often shoud I revisit my palace, so that it sticks in the long term memory?
Day 8 :
Today, I will focus solely on reviewing. Review plan : I intend to go over everything I’ve learned so far. However, with only three hours available, I’m not sure if I’ll be able to cover all the material.
New Memory Palaces: I will create six new memory palaces to enhance my memorization techniques.
Memorizing Quotes: Successfully memorized several quotes verbatim.
Physics Book Memorization: Engaged in memorization without the pressure of a time limit, focusing solely on my desired pace rather than a specific goal.
Reading: Began reading a new book
Podcast: I received a recommendation for a podcast that I plan to listen
Amino Acids : I would like to memorize the 20 amino acids, but I’ll see if I can find the motivation to do so. This one ill time. It shoud take me less than 10 min but ill see
5 min numbers: 60 again. I dont get how its possible, that when I memorized 200 didgets of e i coud easely memorize 70 per 5 min
I did way less Today but i feel much better! It’s incredible how much this forum has contributed to my memorization skills and my well-being in general.
And also: I need to fix my sleep schedule; it’s really messed up.
Memorize 250-word poem: I just want to memorize a 250-word poem as fast as possible. I’ll show the time later.
Physics Book Memorization: I didn’t do it yesterday, but I just want to memorize about 30-50 pages without looking at the time.
Reading: Read my book.
Memorizing: Memorize all presidents and all states.
5 min numbers: 65
I have a question: I just downloaded Anki. How should I use it? For example, when I am memorizing a textbook, what information should I write on the cards? Also, on the flight back home, I am going to make my 00-99 PAO. I still haven’t done this.
For my anki cards, I just do simple and clear questions on the front side and answers on the back.
I also sometimes include non-adjacent information on the same card, meaning I sometimes put more than one question (and answer) on a single card, but the answers are not next to each other in one of my memory palaces (sometimes the answers aren’t even in the same memory palaces).
That’s good practice for jumping around and into and out of memory palaces to find information. And also can help make interesting associations that might not come naturally while reviewing.
But I usually don’t have any of my mnemonics on the anki cards. I just use the anki cards like regular flash cards for whatever I’m learning.
I really enjoy reading your progress. Thanks for sharing.
