League Season 17

Hi all,

Would like to hear your opinion about the need to play a match.

In chess, for comparison, you are not allowed to agree on a specific result without playing the game. Also, not appearing to a game and losing it that way is frowned upon (and fines are being issued for that in the higher leagues).

I think it should be the same in ML. A match needs to be played, a time needs to be arranged.

I see a number of scenarios (bear with me, will try to keep it brief  ):

  1. A match time is agreed, match is played (normal case).
  2. A match time is agreed, player B does not show up. 4-0 for player A.
  3. A match time is not agreed: Both players did not care. Should lead to a deadline miss for both players with warning/removal.
  4. A match time is not agreed. Player A wanted to play, had entered their availability. Player B did not enter their availability and did not care / react / could not play due to (foreseeable) schedule problems. Should not lead to a deadline miss for player A, but for player B. If player B continues to not be available / does not react, they get their second deadline miss and are removed.

What is not possible in my opinion (and if it is, it should not be), is that one player simply “resigns” a match without even playing it, without even arranging a time, simply forfeiting it by entering 4-0 in the League tab.

I get it that the intention might be just to get all their “matches” on paper, to avoid a deadline miss, but I feel that is the wrong way to do so.

If your opponent is not available and if you can show that you have tried what you could to get the match arranged, you should, in my opinion, surely not get a deadline warning/removal. Just inform @Simon about it and things will get sorted out. But simply giving the match away without playing, just to increase your “played” matches, seems like the wrong approach:

  • For one, such a non-match should not count towards a players deadline number because it is not a “played match”, to the contrary, it is a non-match.

  • Players who do not have enough time to play all their matches (or who, at the other end of the spectrum, suffer from a not available opponent) and try to “solve” that problem by padding their match total with some unplayed 0-4 matches are, in my opinion, distorting the competition in their division: in such a “non-match roulette”, it becomes arbitrary who gets a 0-4 win without even playing and who has to play a real match against the person. This distortion ultimately leads to ranking that does not reflect the true strength of the players.

Again, such things are frowned upon in other sports, too, so I think it is not simply a matter of “well, if the person wants to give away the match, it is their business”: it is not only their business because basically all other players in the division are affected, too.

It would be really great to get a clarification from @Simon on that topic. Maybe an easy fix could be that players cannot enter a result in the League tab if a match time has not been arranged by both players.

What is the deadline to play the QFs?

In the rules on p. 9, which is still the old version only mentioning SFs and the Final, it says: “The semi-finals must be played at the latest 2 weeks after the last round of the regular
season, and the final at the latest two weeks after the last semi-final has been played.”

So, I guess also 2 weeks for the QF? QF to be played by 7 May, SF by 21 May and Final by 4 June? Note that those would be max values because actually, if the last QF is played before 7 May (let’s say 2 May), then the SFs need to be played within 2 weeks from that date, and the same for the Final with regard to the date when the second SF has finished.

The regular season has now ended. Thanks everyone for playing!

In the standings tables:

  • green indicates that the competitor is promoted for next season (except for division 1, where green indicates the quarter-finalists)
  • amber indicates that the competitor has a playoff match to determine promotion/relegation
  • red indicates that the competitor is relegated for next season

The playoff matches are the same as regular season matches except that a tiebreak is played if the score reaches 4-4. For the tiebreak, each player chooses two events to eliminate, and the tiebreak event is chosen at random from the remaining two events.

Please play the quarter final and promotion matches by 2023-05-09T23:59:00Z.

@Simon I assume Quarterfinals (like SF and the Final) are best of 3 sets, with a set to go to 4 with a two-game lead, tiebreak at 4-4?

So these playoffs/relegation/promotion matches aren’t best of 3? Is it only the finals that is best of 3 then?

Same question here … would like to know if I’ll lose 4-0/4-0 or just 4-0 against Alex on Sunday

I am quite sure it is best of 3 sets @Sylle. Like at a Slam. Semifinals and the final are like that and the idea was at some point to use that format for every finals match including QFs.

Sorry, yes - the division 1 finals are all best of 3 sets.

The promotion/relegation matches are just one set as in the regular season, but with a tiebreak if the score reaches 4-4.

Hi,
@Simon

I just played my play-off match with @NaoyaH Naoya.

I had a look at the rule book before the match at

It says as “(as of 13 January 2023)” so I assumed it includes this season.

On page 8 it says

"If the athletes are equal according to these criteria, a playoff match will take place with rules identical to the playoff matches for division spots:

  • the first player to 4.5 or 5 games won wins the match (drawn games count as 0.5 to each player)
  • if the score reaches 4-4 (or 8-8, etc), the choice of events is reset, and the match is won when one player is 2 games ahead of the other"

It is the only reference to the play off so I assumed these are the rules.

However Naoya rightfully refers to the post in here from 11 days ago, where you say
“The playoff matches are the same as regular season matches except that a tiebreak is played if the score reaches 4-4. For the tiebreak, each player chooses two events to eliminate, and the tiebreak event is chosen at random from the remaining two events.”

I think is unfortunate that different rules are given.

Hi @Simon , what happens if my adversary don’t answer me and don’t put her availility on the schedular ?
Thanks.

Hello @Simon It’s unfortunate to say this, but the study circumstances surrounding me push me to say that I can’t play my next match with @Gayankaa . I did my best to schedule it, but it seems that my performance also decreased due to lack of training, I wished to play with her and put my effort to stay in the division as usual, but yeah anyway sorry Simon, maybe I didn’t abide by your instructions in the end. I hope you appreciate my situation and accept my apology , and i’m sorry @Gayankaa too  looking to meet another chance. And I hope to participate in the upcoming seasons and championships and to present better than this performance.

@Simon Would it be possible to play the match with Katie a bit later? Due to private reasons I am not sure playing it before next week will be feasible. Thank you for an answer.

Hi @Boris,

I’m sorry about that. I didn’t realise the rules document still included that rule for the playoffs. I think that was written before we settled on the standard set format which is now the same across seasons and Slams.

We will update the rules document shortly.

Hi @Draxass,

In that case you will win by default. I have sent a message to your opponent.

@abderrahman1672 thanks for letting us know, and no problem.

@SimonReinhard that’s fine - please play the match as soon as you can.

@Simon Thanks a lot, that is very appreciated.

Hello hello, is the plan to wait until the season 17 final is played before opening registration for season 18?

I do not think it should be like that. Both are completely independent, in my opinion as someone taking part in both.
