Is This a Good Idea?

Had an idea, inspired by Gavino’s Massive Memory Palace explained elsewhere on this forum.

I’m putting together my first memory palace, starting with a cabinet in my dining room that you see when entering through the front door. In the top right drawer will be a DVD of one of my favorite movies, Goodfellas.

I’ve seen it close to a 100 or so times, so I know it by heart. If you are familiar with the movie(if not shame on you!) you would know that it moves at a frenetic pace, one awesome scene after another(I always say that Goodfellas is one of those movies that every scene is the best scene).

Back to Gavinos idea… there is a website that lists the DVD chapters of any movie imaginable. The Goodfellas DVD has an impressive 45 or so chapters. As mentioned earlier, I know them all by heart, so… wouldn’t these be perfect as nested loci? And could I place other favorite movies/DVDsin the other drawers, basically creating a massive palace in one simple piece of furniture?

Will this work? Can anyone foresee potential problems in this plan? Thanks in advance for your help.

It sounds like it could work well. I think some people here use movies as memory palaces. If you haven’t seen them there are some discussions about it here:

That sounds interesting. What website is it?

Would you visualize the movie scenes in 3d or like a 2d screenshot?

Not sure, Qi. I guess I was thinking of incorporating items into the general details of each scene.

PAO, for example: The first scene when they are in the car, hear a noise, pull over, and open up the trunk to reveal a badly beaten Billy Batts…

In my version, Tommy would open the trunk using a neck Tie (peg to reinforce that this is the first step in the journey). Inside the trunk (instead of Billy) would be the Person performing an Action with an Object.

Does this make sense? What would you suggest?

Thanks.

Hmm, is this for temporary information or long term?

That’s a good question- I don’t really know. I want to set up a dedicated PAO for competition type-card and number memorization. A Mem Palace is what’s recommended, correct?

I still have a few questions about how they work, how to maintain them, different techniques for permanent /temporary memories etc., but figured I’d get started and learn as I go along.

Thoughts?

If it’s for competition then it’s for temporary information. In that case I would be a little skeptical of using this for that because I feel like it would be slower for you to go to the next set of loci when you have to envision a whole new scene each time. Having all your loci in one “area” seems faster to me.

That makes a lot of sense, and is exactly the kind of feedback I need. Thanks.
