Custom Major System

Hello, is it wrong that I don’t like how the major system is presented and I want to create one for myself? according to my language? and If it’s wrong, why? And if not, how should I do it correctly without having a problem with missing letters?

There are variations that exist already in some other languages that you might be able to find in yours.

My language is Spanish and I only don’t use vowels, only consonants for major system.

What language? I might be able to point you to a previous discussion about it.

There’s more info here, if you haven’t already found it:

There is really no “right” or “wrong” or “better” or “worse” or “best” system or technique. There are some that are objectively more efficient in compressing information, but the usefulness in the application of them is subjective. Everyone makes mental associations a bit differently, shaped by our life experiences, languages, brain chemistry, etc…

Many techniques have been refined and reworked over the years and have been made generally pretty effective and efficient, but there’s no guarantee that what works perfectly for one person will work well or even at all for you. You’ll need to experiment and see what clicks “best” for you.

Major is a phonetic or sound based system based on consonant sounds. I’d recommend looking for the common consonant sounds in your language and mapping them to numbers in a way that makes sense to you. If you can leave vowel sounds as free unmapped sounds it will usually make filling in the words a bit easier. There are likely more consonant sounds than there are numbers 0-9, so look for sensible ways for numbers to use multiple sounds. This will give you more options for word construction.

Good luck, and remember, there is no “memory police squad” that will come and arrest you if you deviate from a standard system technique! Experiment and have fun!

Hello, My Language is Portuguese - Brazil

I’m trying to use the system that is found on websites about the Major System and here too, but it is very difficult to formulate sentences, like, X has the sound of ch in some sentences in Portuguese but in others it can have the same sound as "X " in X-MAN for example, the same thing happens with the letter H, it has the sound of R in some words and in others it’s as if this letter didn’t exist, like when I say “HADES” does that Greek goddess know? It’s like I’m saying “ADES”

In fact, I have difficulty understanding the following situation, if I created a word, but it has more than two phonetic consonants, like 3 or even 4, should I discard it and try to find one with at most 2? or I can simply create the following rule that: in every word, only the first two consonants should be taken into consideration, and the rest should be totally ignored!

Does that make any sense? I’m in the right way?

This is what I do for my 3-digit system and it works great! If you are making a 2-digit list, just consider that if you ever want to expand it into a 3-digit list, you may run into some conflicts with your 2-digit words if they contain 3 or more syllables.

Olá! I’m glad to see you here.

I think this thread will be of your interest:

The Major System I show in my videos is basically this one. It is just slightly modified from the standard one, but it’s perfect for Portuguese. If you modified it too much, you wouldn’t be capable of using premade lists that are available online. For instance, you may use mine:

Yes, exactly! You understood it well, and that isn’t a problem at all. You should always focus on the sound. Close your eyes and let your ears guide you. When trying to produce words, forget the appearance of the letters, and focus on pronouncing the sounds.

Tim is totally right on this one, as usual. For instance, I had a 2-digit list when I broke that record, and most of the names had more than 2 consonants. Now that I have a 3-digit list, I needed to throw away so many associations that I practiced for so long. If you are interested in the world of memory competitions, then I’d recommend you to discard words with more consonants.
