Beginners Question for better understanding

Hello everyone,

I’m very knew on memory techniques and improving memory at all. I’ve read some books (started with Books written by mentalists who use those mnemonics for their mentalism shows and came to books like “unlimited memory” by Kevin Horsley.)

No I’m wondering…
I’ve set up a 00-99 list for the Major System and planing about memorizing all my friends phone numbers with that.

The idea that I understand is: create images based on words, based on chars you converted the numbers into.

So let’s say…I have a Friend x whos Numbers is: 0123 456789

One possibility would be:

0123 = Austin
345 = Immoral
678 = shockwave
9 = Boy

for example. So I could make up a story with my friend x sitting in austin, doing immoral stuff with a shockwave in front of a boy (of course add senses to it for better memorizing)

But I also have a list from 00 - 99 which I memorize right now…
The list is originally used to order stuff from 1-100

But I could also use it for various phone numbers, can’t I?

01 = Seed
23 = Enemy
45 = railway
67 = chick
89 = vibe

Friend y for example has: 0123 456786

So it would be

01 = Seed
23 = Enemy
45 = railway
67 = chick
86 = veggie

Is it rather useful or dumb to use the ordering-list (00 - 99) for numbers? Should I make up completely different stories so that almost no word matches?

Do I misunderstand the principle behind this completely with those 2 possibilities?

Thanks for any help.

If you already have a number system, you can use it to memorize other numbers. You would need to create an image for 00 but you would be good to go.

Hi,

thanks for the reply :slight_smile: . Actually I have an image for 00.

I just felt that using the pre-defined list from 00 - 99 is faster than coming up with new words everytime

My only worry was that if I use the same list for various numbers (not only phone numbers), it will confuse me.

Like using “Seed” for the 01 in the phone number, as well as using “seed” as 01 in a birthday (january for example, or the days as 01)

that could be a concern. However I find that as long as my image for a 2 digit number is specific I am good.
ie. for me 71 is cat. Not just any cat, but a fat lazy looking Garfield.
37 is mug. Not just any mug but the mug my wife gave me with my name written on it.
As a result the images can be applied quickly and without confusion.

I tested my number system by memorising the first 110 digits of Pi. I combined the number system with a memory palace to do that.

After that I felt confident using it to memorise the following:

  • telephone numbers
  • family’s ID numbers
  • my credit card number
  • passwords (this was in combination with images for the alphabet)
  • Heath insurance number
  • etc

Just simple examples of what you can memorise, that can be helpful in real life.

Oh okay I see what you mean! What tends to happen is that you are in phone number mode or birthday mode, so you will only be focused on the specific info. You won’t be recalling your birthday then start to recall a number. You have to remember the location will also let you know what you are recalling. Your brain knows what you are recalling. Unless things are exactly the same, the issue might rise up but that will rarely happen!

Advice:

Forget codes and only consider systems if you may, for the sake of method, I call these styles: Dominic System ¶ and PAO. These to respectively stand to the memorization order of visualization of (P)erson performing (A)ction and (P)erson performing (A)ction with/on/to (O)bject. Even these styles you can dismiss and figure your own.

So how to memorize lists then? Create a memory palace and select spots and count then up to 100. The 100th place will be for the 99 and the first for the 00. I would divide the places in 10’s or even in two per 5. 00-09 in a room or whatever you consider, or 00-04 and 05-09 in a room and so on till you get through the whole list. When naturalizing the associations simply recall your peg images from those places… instead of thinking 23 = nm = gnome or 17 = AG = Ariana Grande; which obviously you can also do in tandem, but how could you tell that in my lists 89 person names initials are LS, 92 = VS, 91 = MBB, 90=PS… no rule, no limit.

  • Create a memory palace for 100 places and associate the place with the digit pair.
  • Memorize you people, objects, actions, whatever in those spots.
  • You can still use
  • I wouldn’t use peg lists to memorize list of information, I’d use the method of loci in the variation of the journey if order is needed.
  • I use peg lists to memorize information regarding the peg items.
  • Peg lists can be used to memorize other peg lists. The same image you use for say, if you you make a code matching the digits and the target new peg list, then you can use the same image naturally.

Thanks for the advice,

I’m not quiet sure if I misuse the major system rn (for non-list memorizing), or if what you’ve written is just an additional adivce for the time when I want to step into learning lists (and ordered lists).

Can you please clarify?

Hello hershchoc,

in case of a 80 digit long number…do you still only rely on 2-digit major system? This would make 40 words for the story and a high chance, that words from the premade 00-99 list are occuring multiple times right? Or do you use additional tools then like Loci and PAO?

also…instead of me asking you questioned you maybe already got the 27476583 time… maybe there’s an overview which system is useful for what purposes (as in general purposes)?

Feel somewhat bad to annoy you with simple questions like this

Maybe you can have images for months, a Xmas tree from December, etc.

It’s totally fine to make new images for every phone number. Using the same object several times can indeed be confusing when you are new to memory techniques.

If you plan to memorize more numbers in the future, I would recommend to use the items from the list. With time and experience they will become more and more familiar, just like good friends. Then it’s easy to distinguish them. You also don’t have to come up with new images every time.

By the way, the method of loci can be very useful for this problem. Try to make a short journey, for example in your street, and place the images on the specific locations. The first station could be a traffic light, so you imagine the first friend sitting on it, high above the ground. This gives you the information which friend the number belongs to. Now let’s say the next station is a shop with mobile phones. This time it sells seeds instead of phones. Imagine that all the shelves are overflowing with all kinds of seeds. An enemy with a baseball bat ruins the next station, and so on.

Well since every phone number here starts with 01, I’ll have the word “seed” in every story I make for every phone number.

If it’s just okay to store the friends into Loci to differentitate between them…but still using the “seed” as “01” in every phone number, I think i understood the princip

What I’m doing right now is:

memorizing my pre-set list from 00 - 99 (I’m learning 10, memorize them 1-2 days and then go to the next 10 so it will cost me ~20 days to memorize the whole list)

And I practice with the number generator from the memory league. Here I’m practicing two things:

  • getting used to the conversion between number and pre-set image (so that it won’t be an active-thinking process anymore)
  • Trying to make the images more vivid with every try. If for example 0 = oase, I try to play around with the look of the oase as well as the smells and the surroundings.

When this works good, I would use my memory palace (I only have 1 route right now with 20 internalized Loci) to memorize 20 different phone numbers of friends.

Using again and again the same images from the major-system list (every story will start with an “oase” since every mobile phone number here starts with “01”), but thanks to the loci I will know which friend’s number am I remembering.

So even if every story starts with “oase” there’s nothing to get confused about cause my loci tells me who’s number it is (before i convert back the whole number from the story).

Is this a correct usage / start for major-system+Loci or am I missing something crucial here?

Sorry…every story will start with “seed” of course as “oase” would be “0”

When every number you want to memorize starts with 01, and you know that, then why not skip that digits? So instead of y 01 23 45 67 86 you would just memorize y 23 45 67 86.

I would also recommend to make 20 short routes, one for every friend. For example friend y could be connected to his own living room. His number is (01) 23 45 67 86, which requires five stations. Those could be for example:

  1. the couch
  2. the TV
  3. a floor lamp
  4. a table
  5. a carpet

Now you could memorize the number like this:

y is sitting on the couch. He want’s to watch the TV, but gosh, an enemy is beating it with a baseball bat. Sparks are flying to the floor lamp. When you pay a closer look at the lamp, you notice that tracks are attached to its pole, and a toy railway is driving up and down. Next you turn to the table, which has a chick dancing on it. The last station is a vegetarian who tries to grow vegetables on the carpet.

The settings for the next friends could be a kitchen, a shop, a street, a garden, and so on.

But of course that’s just one method to memorize phone numbers. There are many approaches, and you should choose what works best for you.

Hope that I could help :slight_smile:

That definitely helps!

Right now I’m just trying to figure out if I understand the principles correct and don’t run into misusage. But I feel that I come closer to understanding bit by bit :slight_smile:

thanks :slight_smile:

I think you’re right. But, if you have list of digit images (peg list) for numbers 00-99, then to memorize somebody’s number is just as easy as take of the numbers and place the combination of them into a memory palace. You can always do arbitrary new associations… 7895 could be anything you mind, or can come from the Major System, or any other of your own making. You’re fine doing anyways going with it.

Yes.

My advice for the number peg lists is however you memorize them, develop a way to keep the association by review the list from time to time, this make much easier to later recall whatever actual memorization of number combinations (dates, quantities, phone numbers…).

I usually attach the links to the person when I need to memorise the number.

Have a look at the link here;

@Erol thanks for the advice, will look into it.

I have almost fully memorized my major-system peg-list from 00 to 99. Next plan for it is daily reviewing and start to apply it in the memory league’s random number generator.

Also I plan to hop into the memory palace. Before I go into vocabulary or books my first idea/goal is:

Taking every friend’s birthdate and store them chronologically with Loci. Here I have some questions again.

Friends come and go (after months, years etc.). What is the best method if you need to remove or add an additional number somewhere in the mid? let the memory palace information fade and rebuild the whole stuff?

Also…I have other informations of friends I want to remember. Often I get into situations where someone tells me about an interest or a hobby…it isn’t mentioned for weeks or even month and gets relevant in a conversation months later and I’m sitting there like “Uhm…maybe you’ve told me about it, I don’t know anymore?”

I want to avoid this kind of stuff with multiple kinds of information like hobbies, interests, wishes/dreams/goals etc. Only for good friends tho… not for every person i meet rarely.

Is this still a good call for memory palace and if yes? Storing information informationwise (list of people-hobby, people-interest, people-wishes) or peoplewise (giving each person his/her own palace and store all informations about that person in Loci)?

Thanks

Sure. Look into it first. Perhaps it may answer some of your questions. Did you already check it before you made your comments and questions?

You seem to have a lot of questions.
It would be better if you ask one question at a time, rather than lots of them. It’ll be easier to answer and to handle it.
