Article: The Abacus Changed My Life

I learned how to do math with the ancient abacus — and it changed my life

UC San Diego psychologist David Barner led one of the studies, and he argues that abacus training can significantly boost math skills with effects potentially lasting for decades.

“Based on everything we know about early math education and its long-term effects, I’ll make the prediction that children who thrive with abacus will have higher math scores later in life, perhaps even on the SAT," Barner told me.

Here’s a video that was mentioned in the post, relating to The Role of Gesture in Supporting Mental Representations: The Case of Mental Abacus Arithmetic [PDF]:

When I was younger I’d picked up a copy of ‘Speed Mathematics Simplified’ from a used book store. The book had trained readers to perform calculations using a counter-intuitive system based on the abacus. Unfortunately, I don’t have a copy of the book anymore. Interestingly enough my primary goal in revisiting this forum tonight was based finding abacus-oriented speed-math techniques condensed and simplified :P.

Thanks for reigniting my fire for mental speed-math!

P.S. Have you read the book referred to in the article you linked? It sounds interesting.

We are talking about this book:

Speed Mathematics Simplified

Indeed it does. I really like the book.
It is great for training the method of complements.

Like you say, it uses the abacus and soroban for showing why this speeds up calculations.

I am actually rereading this book. Just for fun.

Then imho you need to reread Speed Mathematics Simplified.
It is full of exercises to help you speed up calculations.
And do the exercises on the soroban.

Wow!!, I’m glad to know that benefits, I’m now even more motivate to practice this.Is not just about practicing a sport. Is also a question o fhealth. Abacus seems improve brain.

IMPORTANT!!!
For to know how works this technique, I’m going to do 10 hours classes of soroban and flash anzan with the world’s foremost mental math expert: Jeonghee Lee (record in memoriad of flash anzan, división, 10x10 additions, multiplication).

JEONGHEE LEE IS THE ONLY KNOW SOROBAN ABACUS MASTER TO HAVE REACHED THE ELEVENTH DAN!!!.

I need two persons more for to do the classes with 60 % of disccount.
Read announcement of this here (I put videos of her also):

10 hours classes like I said is for to know how works the technique, for to learn the technique, you need THOUSANDS OF HOURS BUT… BE PACIENT!!!

Hi Kinma

Am thinking of getting this book, sounds like it would help though some of the reviews suggest you still need pen and paper. Is the book geared toward mental math or pen and paper?
