Are mental maps used to memorize or to organize thoughts and information only?

I think some people use mind maps with their memorization.

I’ve read The Mind Map Book and have tried using them but I liked my own way of taking notes better, so I don’t use really use them myself. I like visual notes, but I also like to write more text than will fit on mind maps.
