Which mental calculation book to start from?

Hey guys,
I’m pretty much new to speed math and was wondering which author/book I should read to make a solid base.
I’m ok with math at school but mental calculation is something else. Now, there are a lot of books on this topic and a lot of articles, videos, etc… which is pretty confusing to choose from. I was thinking you guys could give me some advise.

benjamin seems to be fairly safe advice. Left to right feels more natural to me and was easiest to learn first.

trachtenberg and vedic also seem like plausible methods as additions although I haven’t had much luck consuming trachtenberg. right to left seems to leave me with very little room in my head for thinking while left to right mostly means I don’t have to figure out intermediate mnemonics for values while calculating. (3x3 is my most complicated case currently).

I would guess that once mnemonics are required for intermediate values it probably doesn’t much matter which method you become proficient with.

I would also guess that the more numeracy you have at your disposal the easier any of the methods becomes although in my practice specificity of learning has been the critical element to improvement. Often the time it takes me to select an algorithm is longer than the actual calculation time. This is likely just a beginner’s problem as I should probably be able to identify a good enough algorithm in well under a second.

methods for logarithms and exponents aren’t as common but seem like they are worth while as well.

Thanks for the info.
