What methods do you recommend for memorizing the word?
For memorizing words? like vocabulary?
I’d say active recall and spaced repetition are great methods. They are both implemented by using an app called Anki.
There is a technique called the keyword method, which is great as well.
Goldlists. They’re great for memorizing vocabulary.
If you mean scripture, maybe something like the redux method (write down the first letter of each word as a prompt) instead.
Yes, is there any way to remember and use foreign words?
I recommend reading Douglas Hoff, I have read his books and it is the best to start with, if I have purchased it before when you didn’t know much about the subject, you are very advanced. But I learned the verborum memory techniques with Giordano Bruno, Llull, fludd which is simpler, Ravenna.
He uses the method of poetry along with the method of loci.
Declarative memory
- It is a subtype of long-term memory, also called explicit or relational, made up of both personal memories and acquired knowledge.
- Both memories and acquired knowledge are consciously retrieved and form part of long-term memory.
- Usually, it links some memories with others, in an associative way.
- Declarative memory covers two large categories: episodic memory and semantic memory.
Episodic memory
- It is the type of memory that contains, fundamentally, autobiographical memories.
- Records and stores information related to what was done, the places where one traveled and the emotions associated with the events experienced.
- Among its characteristics are the spatial and temporal organization, as well as the autobiographical reference.
- Episodic memory tends to experience great interference and also forgetting, it retains learned information and events, but does not have inferential capacity.
Semantic memory
- It is what allows concepts and meanings to be stored and evoked.
- It contains the general knowledge that has been acquired during life.
- It is a long-term memory.
- Its activity includes different properties of thought, and the ease of associating concepts, relating experiences, creating, writing a book or teaching a class depends on it.
- It is characterized by its conceptual organization and by consolidating itself as a cognitive reference; It has little interference, recovers information not necessarily learned, has inferential capacity, and retains knowledge.
Hippocampus and its functioning
- It is a structure of great plasticity.
- Through the phenomenon of neurogenesis, it generates new neurons during adult life, a phenomenon that can be enhanced using physical and brain training techniques.
- Coordinate the information that originates memories.
- Its neurons have extensive connections with the areas of the cerebral cortex that register sensory stimuli.
- It has an active role in learning and the acquisition of conceptual knowledge.
- Create association networks between multiple memories.
- For example, when perceiving an object, it coordinates the image with the information that exists in the brain about it.
- One of the reasons why emotional learning is the most effective is because the hippocampus has extensive connections with the brain’s amygdala, related to emotion and feelings.
- Segment memories organized temporally.
- It has been observed that some cells of this structure are activated at successive moments between various events, through a phenomenon known as “filling mental gaps”; Therefore, it is involved in the construction of false memories.
- It contributes to the formation of the content of dreams and, subsequently, their memory because its activity increases during the REM phase.
- By creating and storing basic concepts that are then passed to the prefrontal cortex, it intervenes in the decision-making processes of the prefrontal lobe, from where they are extracted and used when the situation requires it.
It depends on how fast you want to memorize the words. The method I propose is slow. Mind you, I did not originate this idea. I think I picked it up from Tony Buzan or Dominic Obrein. I can’t remember who exactly.
I asked the chatbot bard (Gemini) to generate a few random foreign words:
- Fernweh (German): A longing for faraway places and travel.
- Tingo (Rapa Nui): The feeling of intense sadness and longing for someone who has passed away.
- Duende (Spanish): A mysterious passion, soul, or energy, often associated with flamenco and bullfighting.
- Cafune (Brazilian Portuguese): The gentle act of running your fingers through someone’s hair or on their skin, meant to show affection and intimacy.
- Gigil (Tagalog): The urge to pinch or squeeze something cute or adorable, often accompanied by a feeling of frustration or amusement.
So let me show you the method to memorize these words:
-
Now the first word sounds like “fern” and “way”. So picture a giant fern growing out of a road(way).
-
Tingo kind of sounds like “Tango”. So think of a dancing couple that is incredibly sad. This will tie it in with the meaning. Alternatively, you can break the word into “Tin” and “go”. In this case, think of a tin on a go board. The tin might be filled with tears (to tie it to the meaning).
-
Deunde kind of sounds like Dende, the dragon ball character. So think of him powering up passionately (to tie it to the meaning).
-
Cafune kind of sounds like caffeine. So you can use your imagination there. It can also sound like “calf” and “on” OR “calf” and “uno.” So think of a “calf” turning “on” a switch. Or think of a calf playing the game called uno etc.
-
Gigil basically sounds like giggle. Kamala Harris is famous for giggling, so therefore, think of Kamala Harris squeezing a stuffed toy (to tie it to the meaning).
Thanks for the reply, I had another question, would you recommend memorizing it in time?
Thanks for the reply, the app is good.I need to remember the dictionary in good quality and a lot. Do you know if there are any other ways to do that?
Do you need to remember the words in order?
Do you need to remember the definitions word by word?
What is your goal with it?
I wrote down 4000 words, but I can’t remember them, can you help me?
If you advise any method, I am ready to do it
As I said in my previous post. I would recommend using Anki flashcards. If you have trouble remembering a particular word through cards, use the keyword method. Learn only a few words per day, like 10 to 20. 4000 is quite a lot.
Thank you very much for the very useful tip
