What is the name of this memory system?

I typically use this memory system:

1 = unicorn
2 = electrical outlet
3 = tricycle
4 = pick up truck
5 = hand
… etc

So if I want to remember to read my book, study chem, then practice my Rubiks Cube in that order, I will think of a unicorn reading a book, an electrical outlet spewing chemicals, and a kids practicing a rubiks cube on his trike.

I probably over explained it, but what is the name of this system? (the wiki servers are down rn)

I have more experience with this than memory palace and I like it quite well, but intuitively I would think it takes more work to associate the object with the number, depending what it is, rather than simply walking through your own home.

It’s called “Pair Linking” method.
This is where you’d link Two items together just like how you are doing it.

If you are linking more than two items, then it’s called the Chain Linking method.

If you mean this site’s wiki, sorry about the downtime. It’s online now.

The chain linking page is here. The peg part of the linking is on the peg list page.

Wouldn’t this be just a peg system?

I always thought that linking was more of a way to create an image (like a book dripping chemicals that melt a rubiks cube sitting below it) which you can then place at a peg or locus?

The unicorn, outlet, tricycle, etc would all be pegs created through association, where one can place the images.

Yes, you are right :slight_smile:
It is a Peg System since they are all pre-memorised concrete nouns which corresponds with the number digits.

And we use these pegs like a mental filing system that allows us to mentally file or attach the information for storage and retrieval.

I should have probably mention that, as a system it is known as the peg system.

I used the term “Method” as to how we apply the system by way of creating a Link between two items which I call “Pair Linking” Method if it’s just two items.

And of course what we mean by linking is the action we use involving the two or more items. For me, it becomes a Chain Link, if there are more than two items, it just makes more sense to me. That’s why I called it the Pair Linking as a Method.

Yes, that’s exactly what I mean by Pair Linking method.
If we then Link that final image to a Peg without placing it to a location, then we’d be using the Peg system.

With the linking method, we use it with;
Familiar (pegs) + Familiar (pegs) such as memorising number digits.
Familiar + Unfamiliar (not pre-memorised) attaching words/objects.
Unfamiliar + Unfamiliar, two items not pre-memorised linked by an action.

One of the examples for Familiar + Unfamiliar could be learning a foreign word where we attach an unknown word to a known word.

With the Link method, we can use pegs and apply an action involving the two, or more. We can use pre-memorised pegs, and or unfamiliar objects with other objects, which can then be either attached to a pre-memorised peg, or at a spot in your memory palace.

I mostly use the memory palace method, because even if I use the peg system, I still have to place the linked image onto a location. :slight_smile:

I will call this “Number Object System” as this list has one logically appropriate object representing a number associated with the number.

I use such a system for single digits whenever there is a need to associate just one digit at the end of a long number.

This is quite useful! To understand when the system becomes a method.

The Peg system

I’d say it is tha VALUE PEG METHOD as every Peg or number represents a universal value.
