What are some methods to build memory palaces

Hello,

I know video games are a great way to build memory palaces. But what are some other ways to build memory places I would like to have a memory palace in my head that can support about 4000 elements? Which video games do you guys recommend for this endeavor how can I create more rooms for my memory palace?
Thanks

Real life places are also a great way to create big memory palaces. Make it a walk around your town, or your house, shops, schools, parcs, etc.

Another solution is to create an imaginary mental palace, with only your imagination and creativity.

Personaly, I use Trackmania tracks as mental palaces. I use only TMNF tracks, but ESWC, TM2 or TM2020, or even Canyon or Valley environments can be great to create mental palaces. The advantage of this game in my eyes is that each track is separate, but they are all in order, which can be nice to have a separation between sections while obviously keeping the order. Also, the loci are quite obvious to choose. However, you have to know the game quite well. But it’s doable. There are hundreds of tracks at least, and an average track can hold often more than 15 loci, and sometimes even close to 30-40 or so.

Lately I’ve found success using paintings, photographs, house tour videos, immersive game tour videos, google street view etc for making memory palaces.

For example, I managed to make ~1000 locii with this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71uI9eUsIYM. You can try out similar strategies.

Also, Maya’s channel has a bunch of similar videos which helped me a lot.

  1. Yep shopping MALLS are incredibly baller. HUGE number of things. Walmart. Huge store-complexes. Especially all-indoor malls could be easier than the out-door outlet-style (possibly, check and make sure). Indoor malls could be so good.

  2. Love 3D virtual tours! Those are extremely nice, although being in REALITY in an indoor shopping mall I think has the perceptual edge (possibly big or little) over a virtual one.

  3. Take a friend! Friends make it Super memorable. Or take some kind of item like a backpack and “remember” that you were “with” the backpack

  4. Take a notepad and link on-the-spot whatever information you want to remember. So you make the palace AND link stuff in a 2-for-1.

I think you are taking the term “memory palace” too literally. Your loci do not have to be in one big palace.

Thank you! I am glad to hear that it helps.

My advice for 4000-loci palaces would be to think smaller, and tie them together. My channel was linked earlier, and on it I have some tours of parts from a 2000-loci palace, which was pushing my mind to create. Key is that it is not one palace with 2000 loci, but rather multiple smaller ones that each have their own purpose.

So don’t set out to build a huge palace. Identify how many smaller ones you need and build your way to 4000.

Or as said by Will Smith during an interview, “Don’t set out to build a wall. Don’t start there. Say, ‘I am going to lay this brick as perfectly as a brick can be laid.’ Do that every single day, and soon you have a wall.”
