Using the same memory palace

Hi,
I’m quite new in developing my memory skills, so I apologize in advance if this is question is very newbie. I was just wondering, since there is a finite number of memory palaces you can create, surely you use the same places over and over. Is there not a danger of mixing up palaces, and items/topics mixing together?

On my short experience, yes there is that danger or problem that you’ll encounter. That’s why you need many palaces especially if you’re training. On my 1st deck of card training, that’s 52 pieces/images, when i tried using 52 locations, on my 3rd try, i already encountered that. But when i have almost 160 locations, i can train repeatedly. It’s like having 3 sets of locations. I read that it almost takes a day before your brain “erases” the images.

Some people say they avoid reusing memory palaces. Using a memory palace one time can certainly be an excellent and straightforward strategy for memorizing information that you want to retain permanently.

Like @el_carbo05, I have a number of memory palaces that I reuse, but typically give them some rest in between. I like to use them for on-the-fly learning, so it’s not convenient to be always searching for a new palace. Some people don’t like to reuse palaces because they get confused or annoyed by after images from reuse.

For me, sometimes these afterimages can be a nuisance, but most of the time they don’t present a serious problem. For some situations, I even reuse the same locations within minutes of each other. When I do that, it generally involves combining memory palace locations with numeric or alphabet pegs.

In the end, the choice to reuse or not is a matter of what you like and consider workable. Some people will insist on giving you a hard and fast rule. My advice is to experiment and decide what works for you.

Regards,

Darn
