Using both the Dominic system and Major System- am I going to muddle myself?

I am fairly new to memory systems.

My interest in mnemonics is for use in daily and professional life rather than memory competitions/feats of memory. The question I have is as follows; I have spent several weeks mastering the Dominic system. I have created characters that are memorable to me and I have pairs from 01 up till 100. This works for me as I found the major system quite difficult (noun, verb, adjective - wouldn’t stick) and as Dominic O’Brien says people are much more memorable than abstract images ( tree etc.)in the Dominic system1=A , 2=B and these values are different from the major system. 1= T/d etc.

I think the major system would work better for me for long strings of numbers eg. remembering card numbers and the Dominic system would work much better for dates that I need to remember. For example if I need to remember a phone number 9411759 it is easier to remember the words ‘bear tattoo club’ than to make a story about Neil diamond and Andre Agassi and General Electric and the queen.

I just don’t want to get mixed up and the Dominic 1-a, 2-b etc. is quite intuitive and I do not want to mess with my prompts i.e. 55=ee= oh yes, that’s Eddie the eagle ( skier). For dates it has worked like a dream. Imagining incongruous characters like bobby brown mean I won’t forget that 1922 case date.

Should I stick to Dominic ( I won’t give it up as it works for me) or mix it up?

Basically, find and use what works for you. One’s mnemonic system has to be a reflection of who he or she is. If you would take a look at my persons, you can get a view of who I am.

I personally work with categories for every number from 00 to 99. 00-09 are characters from The Fringe, a tv show. 10-19 are characters from Sherlock Holmes and the A-team. 20-29 are anime characters from One Piece and 30-39 are from Fairytail. Only 20 persons in my system are non-fictional, which are celebrities I like (80-89) and historical figures (90-99). Reading my list of persons is reading my interests, you are litterally reading the way my brain works.

My system will not work for you, just like the system of anyone else here would not work for me. Working with categories might work for a lot of people, and so does working with the major/dominic system, but the content used will be different per person.

Experiment with systems, find out how your brain thinks, and base your system on that.

Hi, does anyone mix systems? I just wanted to bump this up.

Hey, i’ve been learning both Dominic and Major numbers, but am yet to implement them both in learning other material.

I have Dominic system for a P-AO 00-99 (e.g., 11 is “Andre Agassi”, “Bouncing a tennis ball”) and Major system for a full 00-99 P-A-O. In learning these numbers, I have uploaded all information to a combined Anki deck and have no problems in switching between the two systems to answer each question.

I initially just learnt my Dominic 00-99 P-AO, which i also use for cards. However, as this only allows for a single image for each sequence of 4 digits, I decided it may be beneficial to be able to have a single image for 6 numbers, which is why i then prepared and learnt a 00-99 Major P-A-O.

Time will tell if i struggle to differentiate them when used in real life, rather than practice/learning, but i’ve been quite careful to ensure there’s no overlap between any of the segments in either system…

Would be interested to hear others views and practices.
