Hey guys, i was just wondering if anyone has experience with learning a 3 digit system by using the base 3 digit numbers, such as 081 for seafood to help retrieve 681 ( shift, as in the keyboard key ). Lets say im phonetically trying to retrieve shft by repeteadly pronouncing the consonants until the key gets triggered. If that doesnt work, i resort to summoning 081 and making it intereract with 681 for it to trigger. Do you think that this would introduce an unnecesary latency delay later down the path?
I’m not sure if I fully understand what you mean but it sounds like you are introducing an extra step to help you remember what peg/image a number represents. If so, I totally understand your worry that it could introduce latency later down the line.
In my experience this is not an issue, you would be introducing more latency for quite a while but over time you’ll start associating numbers like 681 directly with it’s corresponding peg without the need for any conversion. This is similar to how many memory athletes use memory techniques and stories to learn new languages, but no longer require them once they have practiced the language enough to make the recall automatic.
In general you want learning systems to be intuitive or simple (like Ben’s system) as linking pegs with each other may feel a little convoluted and confusing for a while. I find that linked pegs take a longer time to fade away even once you have learned your system.
Thanks for the answer. When you say it could take longer to fade away, are we talking months or years.
While it probably varies from person to person and system to system, if you are practicing everyday then I would say any latency should be gone within a few months.
When I was learning my 3 digit system more seriously, there were a few difficult numbers that I would remember based on other pegs. For example 155 means Resume in my system and 156 means Chemical. I had some trouble remembering 156 at the time so I remembered it as the peg coming after Resume, which I knew to be 155. It’s been 2 years and when I see 156 I still sometimes think of Resume first.
I had around 40 instances of such linked cases when I was learning my system but with daily practice almost all links faded away within a few months. This 156 case is the only one that has lasted over a year for me. I need to put in some dedicated practice to fix this number.
