Two methods - Memorizing Math Formulas

Concept Imaging

See images, just to name the method something:

  1. Make mnemonic pegs for chunks of the formula. They could be reusable or not, probably more enriching if they are not, forcing you to make new ones for new formulas. Example: sin(u/2) = into an image of literally anything you want, just be very conscious while making the image in order to make an association. To make associations, it’s easier by connotations, does sin(u/2) makes you think of something? sounds like? looks like? feels like? and like so.
  2. Place the chunks within mental locations.
  3. Review. You’re done.

Concept Textualization

Make into text for easier image making:

Step 1. Transform the entire formulas into texts. Example: sine of u over two is plus or minus the square root of one minus cosine of u over two.

About the texts: you can write whatever you want, as long as it represents perfectly the formula and it also only needs to be understood by you. You could insert your codes or memory pegs, say the formula is from economics or statistics and it involves large numbers or tedious combinations of operations, you could already have a mnemonics for it, then write that as the text.

Example

For me these two sentences are the same thing:

“sine of u over two is plus or minus the square root of one minus cosine of u over two.”

“a woman holds a mug with an grape in it while she stares neutrally at the tree root that grows around a candle being blew by her two girls”. (This would be the entire mnemonic just because woman, two girls, grape are mnemonics I have, while the rest is made specifically for this formula).

So, if I have never have encountered this formula before in my life, I would then have it memorized by placing the visualization of this text into a single mental location in my mind.

Step 2. Make mnemonics images of chunks of the text. Do it visually, read and visualize.

Step 3. Place at the preferred mental locations. By chunks or all together at the same location. Be free.
