Touch typing journal

i have been teaching myself to code for the past few months. I feel that my typing speed has been a bottleneck when comes to quick code submissions. I plan to practice 10 min every day till i hit my goal of 150 wpm. I will try to be regular and post daily updates of my typing speed. Little confession though, i am not a beginner. i have tried touch typing before though. Though irrerular with my practice so far i have managed to progress a little. Right now i stand at 43 wpm.

Hey @Parzival, from my experience you won’t need much speed when coding. You probably do well at your current speed because coding isn’t about typing, it’s about using the tools (Eclipse, VS Code, IntelliJ IDEA for me) well for generating code and making sure the logic is good. But I highly recommend creating outlines or pseudocode for your code and transferring those into your code base as comments which does require typing skills. Still 43 wpm is adequate and if you set your goal to more like 80 you won’t need much over that.

A good thing to use is code snippets. A lot of stuff is reused, for example, loops and if statements.

From my experience of programming, 20% of the time is spent writing the program and 80% making sure there are no bugs and logic errors.

Thank you @thinkaboutthebible for the heads up. I had a feeling I was being over-ambitious with my goal. I will be updating my goal to 80wpm for now and try to achieve it in under a month. I will update my goal to 100wpm if I feel the need to do so.

I can’t type faster than about 75wpm any more due to hand injuries, but it’s fast enough for coding.

Typing speed is just one part of text editing speed. If you want to speed up the other parts of text editing, you might want to check out Vim.

There’s a new distro of Vim called LunarVim that looks like an interesting way to get started with it. (I use neovim, which is what LunarVim is based on.)

Edit: here’s an intro video:
