The Mental Atlas Method

Any thoughts on this?

From a cursory overview, it doesn’t really seem any different from a memory palace, just with more of an emphasis of concept-representing images instead of sound-representing images (see the example for heatstroke). And then there’s the verbal component, which just seems to be a bit of the Feynman method sprinkled in for flavour. In the end, it’s no different from what I already use in my law studies.

I’m sure people will have success in studying with this method, but that’s because it just repackages existing ones in unnecessarily fancy language.

True

yeah, it’s similar to a memory palace but ā€œdifferentā€ in some way that is proprietary and magic and you better not say it’s a memory palace!

(it’s a memory palace)

The heatstroke example misses the point. You create both kinds of images for a single scene to get the word and meaning together.
Pet the dog with fire, dog pants and falls over from exhaustion.

Yeah. The author got VERY defensive when I suggested as much when he spammed the reddit mnemonics and memorypalace subs with a massive link-filled dissertation post that used a ton of words to not say very much. (Although I suppose I shouldn’t be one to really talk there haha)

But yeah, call it what you want, its a memory palace and using other senses to enhance scenes. Nothing new there that I could gather.

It’s a commercial product so that might be part of why he’s trying to differentiate it from ye olde inferior memory palace so hard, but at it’s core it’s a memory palace.
The claim seems to be an approach to it that has you treating the entire MP as a single object, along with some other rules about keeping it and everything you put in it as 3D, with the intention of making it so you quickly snap to information, especially so you can contrast different information.
Then he’s got a few other rules like narrating alongside your images, and the use of spaced repetition.

I’d argue the only things that really matter are reviews, and realizing that trying to literally walk through your MP is a waste of time and mental energy. Once you’re familiar enough with where the information is placed, just ā€˜look’ at the loci by bringing it up in your mind directly.

There are demo videos where he guides someone through the process, watching them might show what special sauce is involved. Not sure if I’ll end up watching any myself, I don’t have it in me to go through an hour and a half video but if one of you take the time I’d appreciate any insights you might post.

That said I don’t think it’s a bad thing to repackage the memory palace into your own system and try to sell it, if you think you’ve got a particularly good spin on things. Tough niche though, eh?
