Teaching Mnemonic Techniques to Children

Has anyone tried teaching memory techniques to children?

I’m curious if anyone has developed methods.

I had one idea, but haven’t had a chance to test it yet because it probably needs someone about three to six years old, and might take a while to work up to:

  1. get some plastic number magnets like these
  2. figure out a fun way to make associations between digits and images (e.g., candle, swan, butterfly, flag, elephant, boomerang or heron, snowman, balloon on a string)
  3. help them hide the digits around the room, having them visualize images
  4. for recall, go around the room collecting the numbers, asking them what image was there, and then what number goes with the image.

Or maybe storytelling would be a better angle to start with…?

This seems like a great idea. I am planning on teaching my daughter memory methods as early as she seems like she’s picking them up. If I remember, I’ll definitely come back here and update this thread with my results.

When it comes to kids, I’m not sure you need to go to this length, but you need to make sure to properly impress them with how cool it is. Then you have to make sure that they can get something out of it really quick.

The main difference between kids and adults in this regards is that kids have a much shorter attention span than adults do and they’re much less likely to be able to handle frustration or delayed gratification.
