Supercharging the Method of Loci with Interaction Chains

So, I was on the hunt for a way to make my mental images more memorable and harder to forget, you know? I wanted to be able to recall every single item without any slip-ups. After some digging and brainstorming, I came up with this cool technique that I think could be a game-changer.

It’s basically an upgraded version of the method of loci, where you use a familiar place and specific spots within it to store your mental images. But here’s the fun part: instead of just placing the items at each locus, you create interactions between them. And don’t worry, it’s not complicated at all. You can simply visualize the objects or mental images together, like a reading lamp sitting on a car.

The beauty of this method is that it provides multiple cues for recall. Not only do you have the locus as a cue, but you also have the interaction between the items, which makes remembering them even easier. Let me give you an example. Say you have an apple, a reading lamp, a car, and a phone to remember. You’d start by picturing the apple at your front door. Then, you’d move on to the next spot, maybe the hallway, and imagine the reading lamp there, but this time, it’s sitting on the apple. Next, you’d go to the living room and place the car, but the lamp is still on it. And finally, you’d put the phone in the kitchen, but it’s resting on the car.

With these interaction chains, you have multiple cues to help you recall the items: the locus, the items themselves, and the unique interactions between them. This makes recalling the items a breeze and way faster. Plus, it’s actually fun to come up with these creative interactions! And the more unique and vivid they are, the better they’ll stick in your memory.

I think I’ve seen this with:

peg#1 to link up with peg#11,

peg#2 to link up with peg#12,

peg#3 to link up with peg #13, etc.

I have not done that exactly, but I do something similar:

I would picture the apple in front of the door. But it’s weeeirdly illuminated by an artificial light on one of the sides. That must come from the reading lamp in the hallway! The car is electric and cannot be charged because the reading lamp is using the power socket. And so on…

I would need to try your method to see which one works better for me.

I usually create wild scenes in each locus and throughout a journey to remember vocabulary, so I don’t know exactly how it would work for my case.

  • Locus one: “Two miniature table tennis players on top of a stone, one loses a match and calls someone after the match” (eftertrykkelig)",
  • Locus two: “I try to cross the crosswalk distracted but a tank in the summer almost hits me” (eftertænksom).

In my case, adding the tennis players stacked to the tank would be too much noise. Maybe a cue like a small ping pong ball rolling comically could be added?

Plus the interactions can indicate relationships.

I make common use of this in the programming documentation and such I memorize.

For instance, to indicate a group of things that should be found together in a parentheses (for instance), I might have the different images lounging in a hot tub or boiling in a cauldron (), or lassoed together, or stuck in a hula hoop together.

Handy for encoding relationships between concepts and such.

I’m actually mixing the method of loci with the link/story method. Feel free to come up with any fun story that connects the things you want to remember as you place them in your memory palace. The crazier and more memorable the story, the better!

I really think that combining these two methods makes for an even stronger memory trick than just using the method of loci alone. If you happen to forget something in one spot, you can always recall the story and the links you made to get your memory back on track. It’s like having a bunch of backup cues to help you out!
