Speeding up encoding

Hi everyone,
I’m a beginner with memory palaces, and journey memorization. The one drawback I can see to the method I’ve noticed is that it is time-consuming to encode the memories. Are there any tricks to speed it up? One example of what I mean is for numbers, if you pre-associate numbers with shapes, you can just link those shapes to various pegs in your palace or on your journey. So that’s a way to speed up encoding of numbers.

I have more questions, but I’ll leave it at that for now. There are probably a bunch of stickiest I still haven’t seen yet that describe this, but I haven’t seen them yet. Anyway, thanks in advance for your help!

Welcome to the site.

Yep, that’s what you do. I don’t really understand the question. What are you trying to memorize? Practice will improve encoding time.

Apart from practice, loosening your preconceptions about what the associations should be, I think the only other one I can think of is not waiting until you’re confident that you have it. If you don’t have it, you should figure that out when you do the review and it’s not there, at which point you firm up the association or whatever method you’re using for that bit of information.

Also, keep in mind that not all information needs the same amount of thoroughness to stick. Even complex Chinese characters sometimes stick with minimal mnemonics even when more simple ones require the sledge hammer approach before they’ll remain attached to the brain.
