Speed of memorization:

So I noticed that there are people who seem to be able to memorize 52 cards within 12.74 seconds.

And its been around 5 days since I joined this forum and started using the memory palace to learn new things. So the mechanism for recalling things using the SQ3R method of learning must be the utilization of visualizing information and placing them within a memory palace. (Then later recalling again after initial recall via distributed practice/spaced repetition) I noticed that while I’ve made progress in expanding my working memory as demonstrated by my score on: Human Benchmark [A website that I believe someone recommended in this forum a few days ago… Under visual memory…]

(My verbal memory score was initially a 75 average when first starting to utilize memory techniques, so that’s a massive improvement right there…)

However, I believe the number memory exercise is a test about the speed at which I can formulate images, as the memorization of numbers is timed. As I have demonstrated earlier it is possible to speed up the rate at which cards are memorized, but I am perplexed regarding the mechanism of it. Obviously, I don’t expect to memorize as fast as a memory expert anytime soon, despite my initial rapid improvement in my working memory size. However 52 cards/~13 seconds equates to around 4 cards per second being memorized. However, it seems that the eradication of subvocalization is not the correct mechanism as demonstrated by this study: Subvocalization and reading for meaning - ScienceDirect. Furthermore, a memory expert confirms that eliminating what is commonly referred to as sub-vocalization is not a good idea. How to Stop Subvocalizing: My Surprising Solution (magneticmemorymethod.com)

So I assume that memorizing quickly must be a product of the speed of thought. However, speeding up the rate of memorization would help me a lot. For instance, assuming that each sentence is understood AND consists of 10 words, I could potentially memorize a minimum of 5 facts every 13 seconds (Assuming that I didn’t filter out filler words (A.K.A: Memorizing Key Words Only…)). I could theoretically memorize 30 facts per minute or 360 facts per hour. Furthermore, if I decide to devote 8 hours a day for studying, I could learn as much as 2880 facts a day. This will save me a lot of time to just complete assignments for school.

Does anyone know how to speed up the rate of memorization over time? Or am I engaging in wishful thinking? Thanks!

It is not the right idea to try to generalize facts as words even though they are made up of words! When it comes it cards, it is easier to memorize them faster because of the data is so simple. You can make a system for cards since there will only be 52 cards ever.

I am not sure what facts you are memorizing but it does not scale like you described. You mention how the record for a deck is 12.74. Say some can memorize a deck in 30 seconds. Well in the hour card event, the person should be able to memorize 120 decks in 1 hour. No one is even close to that.

If you want speed, you should focus on memorizing random words and getting good at that. Also you should find ways to represent ideas with a few images instead of trying to memorize every single word.

I did the test only in the part of numbers and I got perfect score but I use memory techniques for numbers so it’s unfair! I think I could more than 30 but I had typo mistake :frowning:

That means you’ve memorized 1 number every 2 seconds, as such as score could only be derived after memorizing approximately 351 numbers.

351 numbers/12 Minutes = 29.25 Numbers per minute;
29.25/60 = 0.4875 numbers per second!

That’s the kind of speed I wish to develop!

No, I don’t count that as cheating! Teach me Master danielfogel!

I mean, I can use memory techniques, but I want to know how I can memorize 351 numbers in 12 minutes…
