Simple lists for practice

What are some ways to create or obtain practice lists for building basic memory strength. It seems to me that before moving on the competitive memory feats of thousands of items most people need to get a solid foundation. Developing accuracy and speed memorizing 10, 20, 50 and finally 100 item lists can take time and lots of practice. Of course people start with things like shopping lists, But that only works so far. I would like to have daily practice using several lists. This seems the best way to develop foundational memory skills. So any suggestions on simple lists of things to memorize for practice are welcome. This sounds like it should be easy. But sometimes the brain sometimes goes a little numb.
Thanks

Try to memorize five things a day. Five counties of England one day, five kings of Germany the next, five species of birds, and so on. Test yourself fairly regularly.

If you’re into sports you could try the previous day’s results with as much detail as you want. Matchups, winning team, scores, standings, team rosters, etc.

Id give Words a go and try like 10-20, and just get used to encoding information and placing it in loci. This can test you a bit because you won’t know what’s coming.
