let’s say i am memorising a date. and the resulted story based on my peg list is
a bunch of people eating a salty nacho and using a sail as a napkin because they are watching a game
this is to remember the day of SALT 1 (a cold war treaty)
so is this sentence supposed to stick on its own (which means i am doing something wrong) or i just need to add it to the anki card as a hint and i will make the association after a couple of times of seeing it.

Think about the situations where you will recall this info. How are you prompted to retrieve it? What information are you given when asked about it? This is how your should structure your review. You should also look for something in the QUESTION that will kickstart or trigger your recall of the scene that contains the answer.
You’ll want to be able to answer: “when was SALT 1 signed?” either as a question from someone, on a test, or just on your own as you think about this topic. You don’t need to memorize your exact sentence verbatim, the important representative mnemonic elements just need to stand out in order. (NaCHo, SaiL and… I don’t think GaMe is the correct translation that you need here…)
A quick lookup of SALT 1 says that it was signed in '72, but “GaMe” translates to 73 in traditional major, not sure if this was a mistake on your part translating the year to Major? 72 would be something like CoNe or CaNe with the N sound representing 2.
Lets take a quick aside and look at NaCHo SaiL CaNe. The simpler the scene and the more action and interaction linking the elements the better, usually.
Consider a scene like: a SALT shaker is pouring salt onto Richard Nixon’s head as he signs the treaty which is written on a giant NaCHo that is attached to a boat like a SaiL. The SaiL flaps towards Brezhnev who bats it away using a CaNe. This integrates important elements of the actual facts that you’re trying to remember which will provide additional prompts or clues for when you want to recall the situation. You’ll need to visualize this in context to bake it into your memory, and review the information via question prompts.
I’d set up a card that says “SALT 1 Treaty - Signing date?” on the front. On the back, just put the key mnemonic elements along with the answer “NaCHo - SaiL- CaNe (26-05-72)” You don’t need to write your entire scene since that won’t help you actively recall it and reconstruct it on your own. Just seeing the key elements should be plenty to prompt your recall of the full scene. After a few reviews, the info should be linked pretty well, but…
Mnemonics aren’t magic, you still need to review regularly in order to retain the information, but using mnemonics can make it so that you don’t need to review as often or forget as quickly as just doing rote memorization. Mnemonics combined with Spaced Repetition is usually the most efficient way to get things stored long-term.

we are usually given a small table of 3 events and we have to fill in either the name from the date or vice versa
asfrom the youtube videos they always just make a short 5 or 6 letter words max i didn’t know i could just use a longer story.
