Seeking Advice on My Strategy for Memorizing and Understanding a Physics Textbook

Before I start memorizing and understanding this textbook about physics (and another about history, but this one later), here is how I am planning to do it. I want to pretend that I am studying for a test, so I need to know this material as detailed as possible. Please let me know what I could do better. Feel free to correct me

My Strategy:

  1. Preliminary Overview:
  • Look at the title, author, index, and number of pages.
  • Understand the structure and scope of the textbook.
  1. Creating a Memory Palace:
  • Find or create a memory palace with the right number of stations to cover the textbook comprehensively.
  • Plan to store 5-9 key facts per page in this memory palace, ensuring detailed understanding.
  1. Chapter Reading and Simplification:
  • Read the first chapter thoroughly.
  • Explain the concepts as simply as possible to ensure a deep understanding.
  • Identify and mark 5-9 key facts from the chapter.
  1. Memorization Process:
  • Use the memory palace to memorize these marked facts.
  • Move on to the next chapters, repeating the process of reading, simplifying, and memorizing.
  1. Repetition and Review:
  • Periodically review the stored information in the memory palace to reinforce retention. I usually just repeat it 2 times (and the next day once again ) and then move on.

Is this a good plan? What should I change or improve? Feel free to criticize and suggest enhancements. Thank you!

I like it.

One challenge you’ll likely encounter is with new material we have no idea how much space things will actually require.

Best to be honest about that.

It’s a good plan all around.

Little changes to consider:

  • memorizing the structure of the book first (chapters/broad topics) as a sort of mental index.
    Doing it in its own memory palace, separate from the main palaces you use will act like a real index and allow you a strong reference point for future review as well as allowing you to consider at a later point how much space you’ll actually want to allocate (later as in closer to when you actually get to the material).

It’s a small addition/adjustment to reduce confusion for large amounts of material that require many palaces/or huge palaces.

But your plan looks pretty good.

Allow yourself to experiment as you move forward! That’s when you figure out the stuff that no one can tell you about! :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks the idea with the mental index was great! I tried to memorize 80 pages today and it worked out well (Just really slow even tho i am ok with memorizing words). Thanks!

You didn’t mention what level of physics you’re studying for. Regardless, being able to solve problems will be the ultimate test of your understanding. I would add plenty of problem solving to your study.

My feeling is in physics there’s less memorizing and more understanding that’s needed. Also, math skills are important.

Its more the basics that i am looking at. And I also fucus on understanding these things and memorize important words and formuas

hey brother i am new here so i am also preparing for the competitative exam … i have only use the shape and rhyme to store the inforamtion …how could we use other techniques to remember chapter too

I forgot to suggest spending some time understanding units, and then using that understanding as a way to help you remember formulas. For example, memorizing units will allow you to remember/know if kinetic energy goes as mass x velocity or mass x velocity^2. (It doesn’t help with the dimensionless 1/2 in the front.) Also, keeping track of units as you do your calculations is a way to double check your results.

In reality it is complicated to give advice of this type because it depends on the type of information and level of depth, it is quite possible to memorize large volumes of information and access it as quickly as desired, but in short, it is possible to memorize large volumes of information and access it as quickly as desired:

  1. Mental images, i.e. modes of figuration in this art.

  2. Real and imaginary mental places and look for a good number of them.

  3. Numerical and/or alphabetical orders

  4. Hyperlinks and indexes

  5. Build systems as needed for example to memorize formulas, numbers, symbols, etc., this is easy if you get used to do it, for me it is easy to memorize systems and develop them, for example to learn to calculate mentally I use geometric shapes which I observe change according to the calculations, but this I developed and memorize and use it in a day …, also a system for mathematical symbols which are Latin and these in turn represent numbers from 1 to 800, etc., get used to this and develop systems as you need them, as you will find information complex to memorize without this.

  6. Registration of practices or sessions

  7. Review every certain number of items *eye here should be reinforced, if you need too many reviews for certain information is not retained from the beginning for lack of attention, visualization, etc., hence the record.

  8. The most important thing is that the places should not be empty, as I said in point number 2, you must fill the places with images and the best are the characters in alphabetical order, I usually do this at the same time that I memorize places that is to say I place characters in places while watching videos of tours on youtube, you can do the same with the information to memorize after you have created the images that will represent the information, remember to treat the information to memorize as if you were developing a dictionary and not a literal memorization, i.e. concepts and definitions of these, and these concepts in turn with hyperlinks to similar information based on other subjects.
