Hi all,

Welcome to Season 22!

Please read the following instructions carefully.

Arranging matches

1. Enter your availability on the League pages

Find the League page for your division, and go to the current (or a future) weekly tab. There are lower tabs for each day of the week. Enter your availability by clicking the boxes corresponding to the times you are available to play a match.

2. Schedule matches with your opponents

If you and an opponent are available at the same time, suggest a match time by entering the date and time into the Schedule field under the appropriate weekly tab. Your opponent will receive an email asking them to confirm or cancel the match.

If your opponent confirms, you will receive an email, and the match will appear on the Memory League home page.

If your opponent cancels, you will receive an email, and the scheduled time will be removed.

3. Cancelling a scheduled match

If you need to cancel a scheduled match, find the match on the League pages, and click the red Cancel button. Your opponent will be sent an email to let them know of the cancellation. If the match was previously confirmed by both players, you will forfeit the match unless you cancel at least 4 hours in advance or provide a reason deemed acceptable by the league administrators.

Playing matches

Note: if you don’t have full access to Memory League, you must keep at least one game available to be able to play a league match. You will not be able to play a match if you have used all your free games for the day.

Choice of events

The competitor whose name appears first has the first choice of event, then the choice alternates.

Challenge your opponent by clicking on their name (for example, in the Scheduled Matches section on the home page), then click Challenge.

A competitor cannot choose the same event twice.
A competitor cannot choose International Names if they have already chosen Names.
A competitor cannot choose Names if they have already chosen International Names.

Ending the match

The match ends when one competitor reaches 4 points with a 2-point lead, or when 8 games have been played. Here are all the possible results:

  • 4 - 0
  • 4 - 1
  • 4 - 2
  • 4 - 4
  • 4.5 - 0.5
  • 4.5 - 1.5
  • 4.5 - 2.5
  • 4.5 - 3.5
  • 5 - 3

The winner (or either competitor, if it’s a tie) should then enter the match result on the appropriate League page.

No-shows

If your opponent arrives between 15 and 30 minutes late for a scheduled match, you can choose to either play the match or take a 4-0 forfeit win.

If your opponent is more than 30 minutes late for a scheduled match, you automatically win 4-0 (unless they have an excuse acceptable to the league administrators, in which case the match will be rescheduled).

Please send me a private message (or use the Contact Us page in Memory League) if your opponent does not show up for a scheduled match.

Videos for Divisions 1 and 2

Competitors in divisions 1 and 2 must record a video of each match, with your head, hands and screen visible.

At the start of the video:

  1. State your name, your opponent’s name, and the date.
  2. Show around the room.
  3. Show your ears, and any ear protection you will use.

After the match, upload your video to YouTube as an unlisted video, and email the link to [email protected].

Videos must be uploaded within 7 days of the match. If you do not provide the video within 7 days, you will forfeit the match 0-4. Please upload your video, even if you lost the match 0-4. Competitors who fail to upload a video for 3 matches will be removed from the season.

Deadlines

Competitors who miss one target will receive a warning. Competitors who miss two targets will be removed from the season.

Hiya Simon. Apologies for the delay in scheduling my matches, it’s been a busy few days. Sorry if this question is answered elsewhere, but how do I know what division I’m in?

Link to standings for div. 5b: Memory League

Also, you have time until the 23rd to play your first match

Hi all, just a reminder to enter your availability and try to arrange a match if you haven’t already done so. There are 39 competitors who haven’t entered any availability yet.

The first target is to have played one match played by the end of week 2 (2024-09-22T23:59:00Z).

@Simon
I failed to read the instructions properly this season: I didn’t state my name, my opponent’s name and the date of our match in my video. Can I just put this information in the video title instead?

I also wasn’t aware that we had to have a Youtube account for this season (will have to create one). I assume to send it by transfer like in the earlier Seasons is no longer an option?

Hi @SilvioB,

Please include that info in the email to memoryleaguesupervisors - thanks.

Yes, if you can use YouTube this season that would be preferable.

End of week 4 (2024-10-06T23:59:00Z) 3 matches played
End of week 6 (2024-10-20T23:59:00Z) 4 matches played
End of week 7 (2024-10-27T23:59:00Z) 5 matches played
End of week 8 (2024-11-03T23:59:00Z) 6 matches played

End of week 11 (2024-11-24T23:59:00Z) 8 matches played

Hi @Simon,
does this mean that if someone has a DNS, it counts as a match played in the sense of the weekly targets? I am not sure whether there was a contrary agreement on this in a discussion during one of the recent seasons.
Also, what would happen in the potential scenario where a Division 1 has less than 4 active players remaining?
Thanks and best regards,
Konsti

@NaoyaH can you play at any time this weekend where I have indicated my availability? I guess our match will only be possible on weekends and I’ll be travelling the next 3 weekends. Thank you!

Yes, if someone arranges a match and forgets to turn up, they forfeit 0-4, but the match counts towards the weekly targets.

In that case we would go straight to semi-finals instead of quarter-finals, and no-one would be relegated from that division.

Thanks!

This sounds somehow like a punishment for the parallel division if there are more reliable players there who have to play all of their matches and still have a chance of getting relegated with decreased chances of reaching the play-offs because of the absence of quarter-finals.
However, I’m not really able to come up with a neutral suggestion since I might be affected by this circumstance in this season.

Ok, thanks. It might be the case in one of the divisions in this season that having not appeared to the only scheduled match so far leads to an almost secured spot in the quarter-finals. To me, a DNS would be on a level like a non-scheduled match, if not worse, since it makes the opponent wait unnecessarily and make them frustrated.

Maybe it is too late to change this for this season, but maybe we should consider this for following seasons. My intent was not to harm anyone here but to establish fair rules for people in one division and for the parallel divisions.

Hi,
How do we find competitors’ usernames on here? I am trying to contact Enrico Marraffa to arrange a match.

Enrico is @Chicc8 - you could check the registration post for any others.

Hi @Simon and @NaoyaH
we just played our match and in the cards game, only 51 cards appeared for me. I did not see the ace of hearts (which was supposed to be the 20th card) and it can also be seen in my recording that it did not appear.
This threw me off for the whole remaining game.
I therefore ask that the game should be not counted and repeated.
I’ll upload the video and share with the supervisors, I invite them to share it with Naoya too so that he can approve it.
Thank you in advance and best regards
Konsti

Hi @Simon and @Konsti

This exact same error happens to me sometimes, but I thought it was the responsibility of the competitor’s internet connection or technical requirements.

According to this rule, I think it falls under this “Responsibility of competitors” on page 23. I’m sorry but it will not be a rematch in my opinion.

However, it is subject to the supervisors’ decision, so if the supervisors decide that it falls under this “Responsibility of organizers”, I will adjust the schedule and reschedule the game.
(In that case, as Konstantin said before, the rematch would be after a month, I think)

If this case is the responsibility of the organizers, I will ask for a rematch if a same error occurs in the future.
Anyway, I’ll follow the @Simon 's decision.

Ah thanks Simon, will use that, I was trying to search on this post

After week 3:

The following competitors have missed two targets and will be removed tomorrow. If you want to stay in the season and have a good reason for missing the targets, send me a message before 2024-10-02T23:59:00Z.

The following competitors are on the warning list:

The remaining targets are:

Date Target
End of week 4 (2024-10-06T23:59:00Z) 3 matches played
End of week 6 (2024-10-20T23:59:00Z) 4 matches played
End of week 7 (2024-10-27T23:59:00Z) 5 matches played
End of week 8 (2024-11-03T23:59:00Z) 6 matches played
End of week 10 (2024-11-17T23:59:00Z) 7 matches played
End of week 11 (2024-11-24T23:59:00Z) 8 matches played

Dear Simon,
thanks for the update and your effort once again! I have one comment and one question.

First of all, I believe that everyone who has missed targets but does not appear in the list has already provided a reasonable excuse to that. However, in my opinion, it would help if other athletes, especially from the respective divisions, are informed who is excused for which reason. Personally, I have an assumption why certain people might not have been warned yet despite not having played a single game, but some athletes might not have such an assumption. It would be more transparent if everyone could see which are valid excuses, and the players from the division should know which player might not be available because this reduces the number of potentially available players and thus might lead to less games played and subsequent withdrawals, so the available players might be punished by excused non-available players. (In an extreme scenario, 5 of 6 players serve a valid excuse for not being able to play a match within the first 3 weeks, the remaining player can’t play a single game due to that and gets withdrawn. This will probably never happen in this extreme case, but any excused non-availability leads to a higher difficulty in scheduling matches with the remaining available athletes.)

The question is: What happens to a withdrawn player in the next season they sign up for participation in the league? Will they play in the same division again, or will they be relegated because of the withdrawal?

I agree in principle, although I am not sure how to do it without further increasing the workload of administering the season. Perhaps people could provide their reasons in this thread instead of privately? Although some people may not want their personal issues to be made public.

I think it depends on the circumstances. We have not so far had any penalty for people who drop out of a season (either voluntarily or involuntarily). If we were to introduce such a penalty, I think it would be better to take the form of a suspension (you can’t play the next season) rather than relegation, because putting a competitor in a division below their strength level is not much fun for the other competitors in that division.

But if someone drops out towards the end of the season when they are at the bottom of the standings table, it seems appropriate that they would be relegated for their next season.
