I bought the book The Witcher (Last Wish) a couple of months ago, because it was recommanded by a colleague. After about 80 pages I have completely lost track of who is who and I’m considering starting over and make notes of every person in the book. I’m wondering if any of you have simular problems with reading books with many different persons and if so how do you deal with that?
Yes, I do have similar problems. I do not yet have a method of dealing with it.
My first problem is that I am not using memory techniques while I am reading. I do not have enough memory palaces and I do not yet have the ability to create them on the fly.
In Nelson Dellis’ interview of Joshua Foer, he (Foer) said that he doesn’t always remember people’s names when he meets them, because he isn’t always “on”; applying memory techniques is not effortless (though presumably it gets easier as time goes on). So remembering the main parts of a book also takes effort.
Plus, it is probably harder to enjoy a book if you are pulling yourself out of it to memorize things about it. However, if we remember better, our enjoyment of the book will probably go up by the end.
I will be starting a book soon (book club), and I am specifically going to try to apply some techniques to remember more. I will probably try to make a palace of the book as I go.
