Another topic that was similarly created to have ready-made peg words 00 - 99 appears on the forum and it got me thinking why not have a resource where people could go to to enable them to fill out their images for playing cards too. I think from a practical level too, that it wouldn’t hurt to have more than one deck of card peg words committed to memory either. A little like having different coloured backs or designs to your decks if you will.

I will start the process with my Dominic System but please feel free to add any decks that you may be using in whatever format, be it Major System, Dominic System or any other system?

The cards for 10’s use the 0=O (Hence, Oliver Hardy = 10 of Hearts). Jack, Queens and Kings follow the “theme” of their respective suits: Hearts (Heart-throbs)
Clubs (Night Clubs)
Diamonds (Wealth - Money Suit)
Spades (Evil)

Note: Other cards in the suits don’t necessarily follow the suit association rule, thus Adolf Hitler = Ace of Hearts is not considered to be a “Heart-Throb”. For Jokers you could use Jim Carrey as the “Black and White” Joker and Trevor Noah as the Colourful Joker.

Please feel free to use my card list or adapt to your needs as necessary. I would be interested in other peoples cards peg word lists be they: Major System, Dominic System or any other unique system that you may be using?

While I use a PAO system for numbers, I opt for Dominic O’Brien’s Person-Action/Prop technique when I memorize cards. This means I store two cards in each location. Some of my card images involve friends whom you wouldn’t know, so I’ll just list a few of my mnemonics here.

Please note that if you’re under 50 or didn’t grow up in the U.S., then some of these probably won’t make sense to you. I also utilize the Major System instead of Dominic O’Brien’s number/letter assignments.

King of Spades = KS = KiSS

Really helpful. I’m guessing you are a fan of Harry Lorayne as I recall from his book “How to develop a perfect memory” that he puts the Suit Names before the Card Values, in other words he speaks of “Diamond 6” or DJ or “DuTCH” to borrow your image, instead of “6 of Diamonds” which would obviously reverse the Diamond 6 to a 6 Diamond or a j,ch or sh of D. The name “JoDie” would work for a 6 of Diamonds written this way. I don’t know what people’s preferences are D6 or 6D? Suffice to say I know that Americans put dates down differently to the way we do here in South Africa too. So today is 25/03/2023 and not 03/25/2023 where I’m from. We also drive on opposite sides of the road to the way Americans do in the States, which did feel kind of strange when I visited the USA back in 2018 and drove my hired V8 Pickup Truck (Which we would call it a “Bakkie” here LOL!). Nice examples! Especially the tribute you pay to HaRRy Lorayne as Heart 4 (4 of Hearts) dealing four hands of cards in front of him. Using a Dominic System interestingly a Diamond 10 would translate to a Dominic O’Brien. Written the other way round as 10 Diamond you would get = Officer Dibble for 10 of Diamonds. 10 = 0 to achieve this. Thanks for your post

I don’t know what people’s preferences are D6 or 6D?

I find it more natural to say “Six of Diamonds.” In my old LPAAO card system all of the number cards were sequenced that way, based on their major system sounds.

I know we’ve talked card systems before, @fred2, but for anyone else who may be interested…

My expanded PAO system is all phoneticall based, including the cards. Each card gets assigned a 2-digit number based on value and suit via the Major System phonetics.

10 = 0
Ace = 1
2-9 = their numbers

Suits get a value based on a visual mnemonic device of:
Spade = 1 (one point on top)
Heart = 2 (two curves at the top of the heart)
Club = 3 (three “puffs” or “leaves” on the “tree”)
Diamond = 4 (four points on the diamond)

So the 4 of Spades is 41, which in major may be RuDy or RheTT or whoever fits your system for 41, along with the actions, objects, etc associated with that number. A RaT. The action of RiDing. Etc.

For Picture cards, the order is reversed, the suit provides the first digit and the value provides the second.

Jacks make the “6” sound in Major System (J for Jack)
Kings give the “7” sound (K for Kings)
Queens give the 8 sound (a cliche female “hourglass figure” looks like an 8)

So the King of Hearts would be 72, maybe KeNNy and the rest of the PAO set for that number. So here, face cards are actually read as “Heart King” or “Club Queen” etc.

Encoding is as simple as reading the card and decoding is just the reverse, sounding out the image.

Thanks for sharing Tim. I remember my previous post and our discussions we had about card systems. One thing I did change that I think is worthy of noting is my Person that I know use as “Jack of Hearts”. I originally had “Justin Bieber” as the JH but have now rather opted for “Casanova” as the image I found for him can literally be read off of the card just by looking at it. I’m particularly referring to his Object (His masquerade mask). The Jack of Hearts’ face in a Standard Bicycle Deck of cards that is very white, looks exactly like Casanova’s mask with the feather acting as the mask’s stick at the bottom of the mask. One is lucky when one comes across such vivid ‘associations’ and when you “see it”, you won’t be able to “unsee it”!!

Hi Tim. One update that I have made. I have moved my original Ace of Hearts (Adolf Hitler) as my new King of Spades (the Royal Cards all being Evil People in the Spades suit). My 11 year-old grand-daughter whom I was explaining the system to, asked me why I didn’t use Anne Hathaway as the (Ace of Hearts). The reason I hadn’t is that I honestly did not know who Anne Hathaway was. Since found out from Google and You Tube clips that she is an American actress that was worth $80 million USD’s in 2015 and has starred in many movies, none of which I’ve seen before. As my grand-daughter told me she starred with Johnny Depp in Alice in Wonderland, I searched for the movie and was pleasantly surprised that Anne Hathaway makes a perfect card image of Ace of Hearts for me. I also found out that the English bard Sir William Shakespeare was also married to “Anne Hathaway” but not the same Anne Hathaway I hasten to mention! LOL!!

I think an even better card association than Anne Hathaway for the Ace of Hearts that’s found ‘intuitively’ (i.e. without any encoding using a number to letter code) is “Orphan Annie” for the Ace of Hearts. The movie’s plot centres around an orphan’s reuniting with her ‘grandfather’ due to the identity of a locket he had bought for his daughter that his daughter had passed onto “Orphan Annie” before her death. So AH (the “A” denotes “Annie”) and (the Heart denotes the locket). If only all playing cards were this easy to visualize without resorting to Major System or Dominic System encoding!

Anne Hathaway, Dale Steyn, Gerda Steyn, Casanova, Janet Jackson, Donna Summer and the Jokers are proving to be problematic. Other areas in template where question marks are could also be improved on.

As ridiculous as it is I have Jack of Diamonds (Person)/ Jacking (Action)/ Spare Wheel (Object). Explanation: Prince Harry authored a book titled: “Spare” as he feels like a “Spare Wheel” within the British Royal Family. Sorry Prince Harry is getting his hands dirtied “Jacking” (Action) a Spare Wheel (Object).

Also whilst Hansie Cronje was never caught sandpapering (tampering) with a cricket ball, he is a fallen icon and was involved in cricket match-fixing, which is why I have chosen that particular image. That being said, as Dale Steyn was also an international cricket bowler I can’t use “cricket ball” again in my PAO. Who else would fit 4 of Spades (DS). I can’t use Donna Summer as she is my Disco-Queen for Queen of Clubs!!

Dr Seuss (Person)/ Writing (Action) / a Book (Object) - that works. But I am going to rather use Dr Salk/ Injecting/ Polio Vaccines for my 4 of Spades. Any ideas on any of the others that I am showing question marks in the table for?? Needles are ‘cringe-worthy’ and may be ‘painful’ and ‘negatively emotionally charged’ therefore all leading to better “images” in my opinion?
