Josh. Thanks for the email you sent with the images on Printerest. I wanted to ask you a quick question about the images. When you are using the images for the Loci method. How do you use the images. i.e, I am comfortable with using the Loci method on familiar routes (e.g., my house), but I never thought about using one image. Can you tell me how you do this. e.g., for the picture containing a castle, do you imagine yourself inside the castle, walking around it or whatever is in the image? Thanks!
Sorry – I wrote that part of the email newsletter before I had so many Pinterest boards.
This is basically how I was experimenting with the site:
I added the Pinterest bookmarklet to my browser. When I’m on a webpage that has an interesting image, I click the bookmarklet, and that posts the image to Pinterest.
Originally, I just had two boards: “Mnemonic Images” and “Scenes & Places”.
Mnemonic Images was for anything I found online that might make a good mnemonic image or that was already a mnemonic image.
Scenes & Places was for any interesting surreal landscape that I found.
Mental images are created from things that we’ve seen before, so I think that the better the quality of the real life experiences (or pictures), the better quality of the imaginary scenes.
The Scenes & Places board was just intended to collect high-quality scenes that are kind of like “vocabulary” that I could use bits and pieces of to create new imaginary scenes in my head.
If I want to give a misty look to an imaginary scene, I have a memory of places like this, this, and/or this, in addition to the misty places I’ve experienced in real life.
I started to collect so many images on Pinterest, that I split them into more boards. The Castles & Palaces were part of Scenes & Places, but I split them into their own board since I like them. They aren’t memory palaces.
I also split these categories into separate boards: people, literary & mythological characters, and fantasy art. Whenever I see a striking image online, I pin it with the bookmarklet. Some of those will be used for mnemonic images.
Some of them are already images, like the King of Clubs and Queen of Diamonds.
The food board is mostly about interesting-looking food. ![]()
Thats where I was going with the ideas…
The first screenshot below is the Pinterest bookmarklet, and the second screenshot is my current boards (in case they change and someone reads this post in 6 months and it doesn’t make sense anymore).
