Phonetic System² (squared), and Feinaigle's Artificial Memory Palace

I think Ill give sketchup a try, then, too :slight_smile:

My next question is about the “number system” mnemon mentioned

Currently I am using a person action object system with 2 digits. 1 to 9 and 00 to 99. I have used it so far only for memorizing numbers. I think its very powerful and have memorized for testing purposes a 130 digit long number without problems.

My question are as follows;

  1. Do I understand correctly that Mnemon says to combine his new number system with feinaigle rooms so as to use those new, extended number images as pegs for memorizing f.e geography information? Lets say you want to memorize something in the 1st spot of your feinaigle room. 1 for me stands for Elf. To memorize that something in the 1st spot, I imagine Elf (1) interacting with it in some way. Did I get it right?

2)Do I understand correctly that Mnemon proposes to memorize a 3 digit system? Like, give an individual image to every number from 1 to 999?

If I missunderstood those 2 above I would be grateful for an explanation as I have read this whole thread thrice but still can’t wrap my head around it : (

Hi sand_elephant. I’m glad you’ve taken a strong interest in this topic. For your first question, what I am saying is that you simply use the basic 99 Major “Phonetic” Words, but if you want to extend it further, you just choose some mnemonic image to represent the hundreds place for each number. And yes, you would imagine those mnemonic images in each pigeonhole on the walls of the Feinaigle rooms. For example. Lets say that the Number-Shape System all represent hundreds place numbers. So any time you see the mental image of a sailboat (4) in your mnemonic images, then you know that you are somewhere in the four hundreds place. So lets say you see a key (7) and a sailboat interacting with something you want to memorize - then you know it is number 307, or 407, depending on how you choose. Because our brain loves location so much, we store these images in places we know well, such as an imagination cube room with pre-determined rows and columns of ordered places to store mnemonic ideas.

I believe I answered the second question as well. Let me know if it still is confusing. Basically, you can just use your main 99 PAO images or Major “Phonetic” System images over and over again, just as you can in regular counting numbers. When we say 808, we have decided that in this case 8 at the front is going to mean “eight hundred” and at the back is simply going to mean eight digits. 8 (snowman) Number-Shape System can be 8 hundred for us, and we combine that 99 times with our main PAO or Major System images as mental filing places for hundreds of images. The image of a swan (2) combine with 90 (bus) is 290. The image of a handcuff (3) with a bus (90) is 390, and so on and so forth. You use those as hooks to connect hundreds of bits of knowledge to.

I profoundly apologize for being so dense, let me summarize so that you may see if I understood correctly or not;

If I understood correctly, you mean to say the following; I can use my current 1-9, 00-99 POA system (for the sake of argument lets call it image system alpha). However, so as to recall better in which feinaigle room my stored knowledge is located, I should make up a new 1-9 image system that will be only used as the first digit. 100, 200, 300 and so forth. for the sake of argument, lets call this new 1-9 image system, “image system beta”

lets assume in image system beta, 1 stands for batman. And lets assume I have a feinaigle room where one of the walls is 101,102,103,104,105,106,107,108,109.

Now, lets take 101. the first 1 stands for batman, and “01” stands for Ralof ( the person for 01 in image system alpha)

Now, lets assume we have a feinaigle room where one of the walls is 1001 to 1009

Here again, the 1 stands for batman (image system beta), 00 stands for Rorschach (image system alpha) and 1 stands for elf (image system alpha)

Did I understand this number system correctly? Im sorry if I didn’t, english isn’t my first language :<

Yes, sand_elephant. I believe you understand it now. Now you have just created your own system for mentally storing vast amounts of knowledge. You do not need to spend time memorizing real journeys, because you now have an infinite number of imaginary rooms, with organized, numbered places, to store that knowledge. All you do now is mnemonically link the things you want to remember, to your Feinaigle rooms with your PAO system, or whatever memory number system you choose. So your Image System Alpha can represent hundreds place, and your Image System Beta can represent singles and tens digits. You make up a separate list of 1-9 that represent hundreds, and anytime you see those images in your mnemonics, you know that you are in the hundreds area for that knowledge, but you continue to use your basic 00-99 over and over. Now, if you continue using a different, separate list of 00-99, it will allow you to have 10,000 places to store knowledge - any knowledge you choose (history, geography, chemistry, languages). The reason you will have 10,000 places is because 00-99 = 100, and 100 X 100 = 10,000. So one list of your PAO system will represent 100’s place, and the other one will represent singles and tens digits up to 99 only. Keep in mind, also, that the Phonetic System² (squared) is for use in memorizing knowledge, not for speed memory competitions.

It sounds to me like you understand it now. By the way, you can use any polyhedral shape you want - you do not have to only use a Feinaigle cube room. You can use an octahedron room, or a tetrahedron room. The reason we use imaginary rooms is because the human brain loves loci (location) and having a physical place to see when thinking about other ideas. Your own inventive mind is the limit, and your creativity is unlimited.

I am really happy that I found this thread.
I have tried many of the things described in these posts, although not exactly the same and with different names.
I have used real houses, artificial mansions, streets, what you call here “nested” (I was using the word “zoomable”, but bested is better). I have major system with words and with people, I have used “signifiers” to use the same house many times (it did not worked for me), I have tables with pixar or Disney characters. I have not been very successful with PAO’s either.
I had been trying a practical system to learn verbatim. I am still experimenting.
I don’t nest rooms within rooms but objects within rooms, and then I treat objects (furniture, decoration, etc.) as rooms.
My last experiment is with paintings. I am trying to convert paintings into loci walls. Then I might hang one painting in each locus as a way to nest more information inside.
This is because a project I am beginning now, in some areas I need to ask less information, in some areas more, so I need more nested rooms.

I the image above, I am not sure how it will work. I think I will have to imagine the painting a bit 3D, so I walk around it.
When I finish the experiments, I will began to work on the Sistine chapel:

Excellent reply and photos of your memory places for the painting and this colorful map, Liam. Keep up the good work, and let us know what your progress is.
