I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out why. Pandemic parenting, for most parents who work full-time, basically requires child neglect. You can’t meaningfully interact with a baby while also working. Result: baby gets stuck in front of a video for hours. That can’t be good for the IQ.
It does seem that it takes more than a politician’s brain though… apparently, they didn’t have that foresight and all they managed to do was blindly listen to epidemiologists about how to solve one single problem.
That’s pretty serious. They said 22 points?
Also it highlights the effects of exposure of environment on a baby’s brain. That stimulation to lots of nature, colors, people, music (?), all kinds of stuff. I mean, that’s the same stuff that keeps my brain from feeling “dry”. Along with all the love from you guys.
22 points is indeed crazy, that’s over 1 standard deviation. Not that IQ’s are useful anyway though
Not IQ per se, but it’s edifying about the mental health of children, and also many adults. I guess that social intelligence, emotional intelligence, this kind of stuff, is also severly affected by the pnademics.
So one thing to ponder in response to, well, sad/uncomfy news is – what’s the game plan? The hope? What do we do about it? It is what it is? Miracles, rehabilitation? How serious is that? Am I overthinking or underthinking? There must be a game plan (?) There’s a lot going on in the world and where do I put my attention? What to do when we hear ‘bad’ news? This is philosophical and also maybe I can learn about this question, how to deal with life and living it and my emotions about it. Am I overthinking? I’m going to send this reply now and look at some other posts. I feel like you guys know what I’m talking about.
Interesting that there’s no mention of masks. Babies watch how you form words with your mouth, smiling teaches them to smile, and full facial expressions teach them huge amounts about interpersonal relationships and language. So if babbling is one evaluated marker then of course there will be lower scores. I find it fascinating that people ignore the impact of barriers like masks.
