Hello everyone,
I’m seeking advice from people with strong knowledge and experience in memory techniques.
In 8 months, I will take a major exam with about 2.5 million participants competing for 55,000–60,000 seats in good colleges. While many take it just for formality, my real competition will be around 300,000–400,000 serious candidates.
The exam format:
-
180 questions (4 marks each, -1 for wrong answers)
-
90 questions from Biology
-
90 questions from Physics & Chemistry
I want to study quickly, efficiently, and effectively to secure a top score.
My Current Approach
I started with Biology, using the story method (creating vivid images).
Example (from Evolution, “Origin of Life”):
-
Text: Early Greek thinkers believed life units (“spores”) came from other planets → Panspermia.
-
My story: I pictured a Greek statue thinking about space, spores in a box being thrown from space to Earth.
Another passage about spontaneous generation vs. Louis Pasteur:
-
Text: Life was thought to arise from rotting matter until Pasteur disproved it with experiments using yeast flasks.
-
My story: I imagined a farm with rotting straw and mud, then Louis Pasteur showing two flasks, one closed and one open with yeast. From the open one, life emerges, and Pasteur shoots the false believer with a sniper.
This is memorable for me, but it takes 2–3 hours to encode a chapter of 15–20 pages.
My Questions
-
Linking stories – How do you link multiple stories together? For example, there are two experiments with the same date (1953). I remembered “Tiger Punching Lion’s Mouth” (1-T, 9-P, 5-L, 3-M), but how can I differentiate them?
-
Memory Palace usefulness – Since I don’t need to recall chapters in strict order, is the memory palace still effective for me? Are MCQ clues enough when combined with images/stories?
-
Visual memory of pages – Before using memory techniques, I vaguely remembered where information was on a page. Example: George Gamow’s coding theory in the last paragraph. If I switch fully to stories/memory palaces, will I lose this advantage or confuse it with false images? Can I improve this natural method instead of replacing it?
-
Time to mastery – How long does it realistically take to become very good at memorization, given I’m on a tight 8-month schedule?
-
Physics & Chemistry struggle – I find it difficult to turn formulas into stories or use the memory palace effectively. Should I keep practicing in hopes of getting faster, or are there better strategies for these subjects?
Final Request
I’d really appreciate tips, tricks, and advice from experienced memory practitioners. I’m in urgent need of guidance to maximize my learning efficiency.
Thank you so much for your help!
