I’ve read through the wiki on remembering names, because I’ve always had a hard time with them. I’m also reading Ron White’s short book on the subject.
It seems pretty straight forward. I’m surprised that none of the methods mention attaching the names to loci. Maybe Ron’s book does later. I’m pretty sure Anthony Mettivier’s names book does, but I haven’t bought it yet. (I’m spending lots of time on Amazon memory ebooks.)
For those of you that use a name method, do you find it helps to store these in a memory palace? I’m thinking it would, but I’m trying to figure out which of the locations I’ve setup would work best. Or should I setup multiple ones - organized either alphabetically, or where I met the person.
My goal with names is to no longer forget the people I meet. So if I use loci, l will need tons of locations.
Loci tend to be the most helpful when memorizing ordered, or sequential, items. That’s why people use memory palaces when memorizing numbers, cards, stories, poems, etc. If the order of names is important, for example, if you’re memorizing historical figures and want them to be chronological in order, or memorizing based on some sort of ordered importance, then loci would be great. However, most people want to be able to recall a name upon seeing a face, and that is why most folks try to create an image of the name and place it somewhere on the person’s face.
I do sometimes use loci for names, but only if I want to review them later on to remember it for a longer period of time.
Say I meet 50 people at a conference, I will want to remember them in the long run as well. So I put the name+face image on a loci to be able to review them later that day without risk of forgetting any.
