Morse Code Mnemonics

I’ve always wanted to learn Morse code. I decided to make some mnemonics using the major system, with dots as one and dashes as two. The letters are animals. I used rememberg.com to make most of them.

Letter - Animal - (Code) - Mnemonic - Description

A - Alligator ( .- ) - ToN/DNa - An alligator’s mouth is being held closed by a TON of stuff. OR An alligator’s mouth is being screwed closed by DNA. (For me I think of the screw structure of DNA)
B - Bat - ( -… ) hiNDu DoT - Right in the middle of it’s head, of course.
C - Cat - ( -.-. ) - iN The NuDe - This cat is shaved and trying to cover itself.
D - Dog - ( -… ) - eNDoweD - He’s quite happy to see you…
E - Elephant - ( . ) - Tea - Drinking TEA with his trunk. (Is his pinky raised?)
F - Flamingo - ( …-. ) - DeaD haND - The flamingo is standing on one foot because the other one is a DEAD HAND.
G - Giraffe - ( --. ) - uNwiND - This giraffe is trying to UNWIND it’s neck from the branches of a tree.
H - Horse - ( … ) - Two TooTheD - Two big buck teeth.
I - Iguana - ( … ) - TaTToo - Tough guy iguana.
J - Jaguar - ( .— ) - TeN iN oNe - Instead of claws this jaguar has a TEN IN ONE Swiss Army knife.
K - Kangaroo - ( -.- ) - NewToN - The kangaroo is pulling a NEWTON tablet out of its pouch.
L - Lobster - ( .-… ) Two haNDeD - This lobster’s claws are actually two hands.
M - Monkey - ( – ) NeoN - King Kong is climbing a building, and grabs a NEON sign.
N - Newt - ( -. ) NewT - (This one is tough…)
O - Ostrich - ( — ) - oNe oN oNe - A tough basketball opponent, as ostriches are so tall.
P - Parrot - ( .–. ) - wooDeN waND - Since it can speak, casting spells with its WOODEN WAND is easy for this bird.
Q - Quail - ( --.- ) - 19 / New iN TowN - This 19 year old quail is NEW IN TOWN and asks you for directions.
R - Rat - ( .-. ) - TNT - This dirty rat is a terrorist.
S - Snake - ( … ) - DeaD aheaD - Watch where you step, there’s a rattle snake DEAD AHEAD.
T - Tortoise - ( - ) - hoNey - This tortoise is even slower when it has to swim through honey instead of water.
U - Urchin - ( …- ) - hoT TuNa - This urchin is into inter species action.
V - Vulture - ( …- ) - TieD DowN - Waiting for that man TIED DOWN to the desert floor to die.
W - Walrus - ( .-- ) - TeeNy weeNy - The mustache goes great with that polka dot bikini.
X - X-Ray Fish - ( -…- ) - saND DuNe - This fish has little chance stuck on a SAND DUNE in the desert.
Y - Yak - ( -.-- ) - aNTi uNioN - This yak is waving the union jack, and is still upset about losing the war with America. (I guess it likes some unions…)
Z - Zebra - ( --… ) - iN aND ouT - This zebra is hard to see, since it’s stripes keep going IN AND OUT of focus.

That’s an interesting way to tackle this problem. When I first learned Morse Code, I did it entirely by flash cards and straight up memorizing it without any mnemonics. However, after learning some of these techniques, I feel it might be easier to use your idea, and combine it with a mind map in a memory palace using the diagram found here to strengthen the association:

You could create a zoo with your current images, and place them as loci in a memory palace that is built like the diagram. So for example, if you enter your imaginary zoo and take a right where it branches off (which would represent a dah), the first exhibit you’ll find is a tortoise swimming through honey. If you take another right (which would be another dah), you’ll find an exhibit where ostriches are playing basketball, and so on. Not only would the individual images remind you of the dashes and dots, it would be further reinforced by the mind map you have created.

Just a thought.

Nice comment mate because since learning half of these last night I tested myself on Anki and I wasn’t able to recall what the letter was if only given the dots and dashes. So organizing an imaginary zoo with dots and dashes being the order would be very helpful.

Then just extending on those when the dots and dashes are combined. Nice idea, this will definitely assist in the recall
