Mnemonics for Bitcoin Seed Phrases

This article has some creative and very esoteric conversion techniques “to learn” a BIP39 generated 3-24 word list to use as a recovery phrase or seed phrase so that you don’t have manage any physical storage for your bitcoin. The list is unique in that the last word acts as a checksum.

The premise of the article is that words aren’t always the best way to memorize and therefore, Thorbjørn König, a bitcoin product designer, surveys alternate and creative but mostly unusable possibilities.

  • Braille and derivitive tactile methods
  • Logograms (in the film Arrival)
  • Shapes - grammar, origami, LEGO
  • Colors
  • Choreography
  • Sound - tonal, cymatics, oscilloscope

Because of the complexity of the conversion systems and the resulting difficulty in even recognizing the language in use, it is more appropriate to call these encryption systems. What König really needed to do is help people remember a string of words through simpler methods of a story or peg system.

What we really see mostly in this article is a fascination of the forms of art for language and not mnemonics. But it’s bitcoin so it’s cool. At least you have a new tool for a random word generator.

Thank you for sharing this interesting article about using alternate methods to memorize Bitcoin recovery phrases or seed phrases. While the article explores some creative and unique approaches, it seems that the complexity of the conversion systems may actually make it more difficult to remember the information, rather than simplifying the memorization process. In general, mnemonic techniques like the story or peg system can be more effective for memorizing information by creating associations with familiar and memorable concepts. However, it’s always interesting to see how people are pushing the boundaries of memory techniques and exploring new ways to use them.
