I have one, probably, big problem. I was sick maybe 10 days ago, and I had just fever about 40°C for 2 days. I was really destroyed. I had a rest after that for two days, so I didn’t even train my memory. But after that rest, I noticed that my results are horrible (compared to the results before sickness).
I tried to memorize deck of cards. It took me 45 seconds (It wasn’t normal for me, so I was surprised)… And when I recalled it, 15 errors! Damn, what happened! Another attempt… The same results. My 5 minutes numbers. I’m glad I can reach 120. Before : 200.
One hour ago, I had a training. 70 Slovak words in 5 minutes, 0 points, because I made mistake in each 10th word. Deck of cards in 46 seconds, 5 errors. And I can’t even go faster!
Do you know what happened? Did that damned fever burn my brain out? I noticed a big lost in my memory… And I cannot solve it. I train for all the week, and still no improvement. And I think it’s time for some advice, because I don’t know what to do. How is it even possible to lost memory just because of fever!
Before that, I could memorize deck of cards in 33 seconds without error, and without any problem, because I could reach time under 30 seconds whenever I wanted to. But of course, there were some errors. But now I have to skip cards if I want to go faster…
I don’t know what do to, guys, but I’m pissed at the whole world!
I think there may be a bit of a nocebo effect going on here. Take a break for a day, don’t even think about your memory, then go back to it. Make sure you’re relaxed and calm, don’t think about doing better, just think about doing the challenge.
I don’t know if the brain is any different post-fever period, and I’m not a doctor or a neuroscientist, so I can’t tell you. Sorry!
Also, while you’re here, Milan. You train super hard, every day. How do you stay motivated, and how do you deal with the headaches that you’re bound to be getting from all this hard work?
I don’t know, how I do that, but I just do it. But I don’t train hard. My training never took more than one hour, average time is 30 minutes. But this months wasn’t good, I missed a lot of trainings. So I don’t call it “everyday practice”. But it used to be until this “sickness season” (read below).
I also do weight-lifting. It’s little bit off topic, but I was able to reach 100 kg for bench press in 6 months, and at the beginning, I could press just 50 kg. And my weight was 73 kg and after 9 months it was 90 kg. I was 15 years old. And I wasn’t fat. Also few guys who ate some proteins (you know, supplements) didn’t get such a results. So a lot of people told about me, that I must have steroids or something. But I was “clear”. I just told myself “it’s time to train, all right, I’ll do it”. And it was maybe 30 minutes (50-60 minutes with warm up sets and so on) 3 times a week, and I can lift 170 kg for dead lift. So I don’t train just mentally but also physically.
As you can know last time I was sick, so I lost a lot of physical strength and muscles, so I’ll have to catch it up together with memory. And I was sick 2 times for a last month. It’s a wonderful feeling. But there was some virus in the air, a lot of people got sick.
I don’t want to have big muscles to get chicks or something, I just like a challenge. It’s the same case as mnemonics. A lot of friends are surprised when I loose some strength because of sickness and I just tell “it’s all right, I’ll catch it up, and 3 times faster than before!”… I’m not depressed. But I was pissed about my memory loss because it’s almost unsolved case, it shouldn’t happen, but it did…
I don’t want to look like an self-praising asshole, I think that’s the worst you can do, accept the fact that you know something. If you want to reach something, and get better, but the feeling that you’re still not there, and you want to be there, that’s a good motivation, at least, for me.
By the way, I have a deviated septum (bones in nose). So I can’t breath well through my nose, my left hole is almost fully blocked, and that’s why I have pretty much constant head-ache. I don’t have head-aches because of memory training. It sometimes reduces pain because I don’t think about it. I plan to have a surgery in September, and then it will be big breaking of my personal memory records! I’m also allergic, and these times there are a lot of allergens in the air, so I have my nasal cavity often full, and when I move my head, it feels like thorns inside my head.
So many problems, I know, but I don’t give a crap about them, I do what I like to do.
I read that article, I read everything you post here. I’m addicted on this forum.
By the way, thanks you for the advices! I’ll try it… Tomorrow, no one will find me! I’ll disappear in the nature.
