Hey,
Sorry to be that guy who talks about religion on here.
But i am religious (Inquiring Eastern Orthodoxy to be precise)
And i thought it would be a fun challenge to remember the Orthodox Christian prayers in Icelandic.
Does anyone have tips/tutorials of some sort?
I don’t think this should be any different than any project of verbatim memorization (whether the text is sacred or not). Searching on this forum with the key words “verbatim”, “bible memorization” or “first letter method” can give you some ideas.
Now the additional difficulty may be that you don’t know the language (well), but that doesn’t make it impossible. You’d just have to learn the words first like you’re learning vocabulary in any foreign language (plenty of threads about this in the language-learning section).
Depending on how much you understand the texts already it may be more efficient to learn vocab first, and then the text. Or to learn the text and the vocabulary at the same time. I suspect it’s a question of personal preference (like a lot of things are).
30-40 lines of text really doesn’t seem all that much, it’s definitely doable. Especially since it seems easy to divide it into small chunks. Just choose one prayer and try something out. Then see what worked, and adapt your method if necessary.
People on this forum would be happy to try to help if you’re stuck, if you tell us what you’ve tried and what the concrete problems are. Or even if you tell us what you intend to try and have doubts about one step or another.
I don’t know any icelandic at all and this make it a very interesting… Don’t forget to give us an update!
A little update: I am currently learning a small foundation of Icelandic so i know how to pronounce what, for this im using Drops for Icelandic, icelandiconline.com and Resources
I can almost read icelandic fluently
@Hari-P gave great information. I’ll add that you may need to experiment a bit to find the method that best suits you and the material you’re memorizing. So, although you may start with a certain kind of memory palace for storing these prayers, you may need to make some adjustments along the way.
I’d probably start with a palace that devotes a room (or, if outdoors, a space) to each prayer, since they seem relatively brief. And then I’d see if I could comfortably store each line in its own locus. The challenge will be figuring out how many images you’re going to need to trigger the Icelandic words. In other words, if you’re going to need to break each word down into syllables, each with its own image, then you’re going to want a good amount of space; you may need an entire palace for each poem. But if a single image can help you recall an entire word — or even multiple words — then you could probably get away with a relatively compact palace.
If there are recurring phrases throughout all the poems, I’d suggest coming up with a single image that always represents them, which can help to improve efficient recall.
