So I’m new to memory techniques (so far read Moonwalking With Einstein, and the Art of Memory e-book, Unlimited Memory, and seen the LinkedIn Learning “Improving Your Memory” course).
Starting with the example in the e-book (otter, toolbox, beans, shell,…) I’ve used the Major system to memorize pi to 30 digits.
One interesting thing is that the approach in the e-book is a Memory Palace which starts off with that photo of a bedroom (beans on one side of the bed, then shell on the other). But I found that I didn’t need to use a memory palace for that as I’m just remembering the “left to right” order as I look from the otter going clockwise sort of out into space. This seems to be working for me and I feel like I could do a lot more than 30.

Is this a bad idea? Would it be better to have all the images on a solid loci in a memory palace or ok to just have them linked to each other going off into space?

To find say the 11th digit, I’d have to start from the front and walk in down the list (or jump in groups of 8 which I can recall)…would it be better to also incorporate an index number into each image? So for example instead of remembering a shell on the bed, remember the shell on top of an axe and a racetrack (for 7,8) ? Or at least the closest index (axe==7) ? I think this would make it more like a numbered peg list and then it’d be easy to just jump to an index to see what image there relates to the 2 digits of pi there.
