Memorizing a string of numbers and letters

I apologize if this has been discussed before. I use a 2 digit PAO and recently was challenged to memorize 3 different car vin numbers. This was something I never really practiced.

The challenge is a ViN number on a car is 17 characters long mixed with numbers and letters. I had an extremely hard time with this. As someone who can easily memorize 200+ digits, this was new to me.

Example: 4S3BMHB68G3286V50
GBH41JXMN1091K634
1HGBH41JXB185D631

Any thoughts on this?

You could make a system that has an image(s) for each alphanumeric character and alphanumeric 2-character sequence. 0-9 is 10 plus A-Z is 36 images. 36x36 for each 2 character combo is 1296
