Hi! I was wondering if there is a way to memorise melodies for the piano aural exam, as I often get the pitch wrong because I forget the melody. While the rhythm is correct, the pitch is completely off because I’ve already forgotten how the melody sounds, so iI can hit the notes for the first bar, but not for the next bars. Any tips?
Hi. I don’t know about music. But you can symbolise things with images. Or add invented lyrics.
Hi!
Here’s a little old-school trick I use.
Try cupping one hand from your mouth to your ear, with your palm near your mouth and your five fingers resting around your ear. Now sing softly into your hand. It’s a simple feedback trick that lets you hear your own voice more clearly and notice when a pitch feels comfortable or needs adjusting.
Of course, do this when you’re not playing the piano, just practicing the singing. Humming works beautifully too!
Since you’ve already got the rhythm, you’re halfway there! Try humming one bar at a time, noticing whether the melody rises, falls, or stays on the same note. Then connect the bars little by little.
Here’s another fun trick: find the melody’s home note, the note that feels like home. When you get lost, see if you can hear your way back to it. Then check yourself against the piano.
Don’t rush to memorize the whole melody. Give each little phrase a chance to become familiar.
Hear it. Hum it. Feel it. Find your way home. ![]()
Have fun with it!
