Memorising herbs, actions and medicinal properties

Hello to you all!

Im new to this forum and also to this art/science.

My reason for wanting to learn art of memory is for my studies as an practicing herbalist.

For every plant i need to memorise its;

common name,
latin name,
french name,
its tastes (bitter, sweet, spicy etc …),
its actions (astringent, nervine, emolient, etc…),
Its system affinity’s ( digestive, nervous, immunitory, etc…),
Its specific actions ( good for stoping blood, good for healing skin, etc…)
And energetics (hot, cold, dry, humid).

Im not really sur how i should go about it. I will need to commit to memory close to 130 herbs.

So my question is this:

How would you do this project?

130 different memory palaces?

1 palace with many variations?

How would you manage many plants having very similar actions?

Any help appreciated!

What jobs I can do with a trained memory?

What I would do as far as palace goes is use what it’s main purpose is for a palace.

“Stopping blood palace”
“Good for skin palace”

Because I am assuming it’s the most important attribute. Then id place 1 plant per loci and just load up on images for each attribute.

However, all plants can do more than one thing. And many plants can do what others can do.

Example.

Yarrow and purple loosestrife can both stop blood.

Yarrow can stop blood and sooth dental pain. (And more)

Purple loosestrife can stop blood and stop diarrhea. (And more)

Ahhh ok. What if you just went with 130 loci, and just came up with images for everything. It’s for studying so there’s no need for speed. I think you’d be fine to put 10 or so images in one loci

Interesting!

This would actually be my first attempt for a memory palace. At first I was under the impression that ppl had only one big memory palace that they would reuse for many projects.

Now that im reading a bit more in the forums, seems many ppl have many palaces.

You are right, I do not need speed. But I do want to start it the good way. That is why I asked the question in the first place.

Now that the ball is rolling with ideas, I realize that with the years, I will probably be needing to add stuff for each herb. So my herbal knowledge is ever expanding.

The information I want to memorize is not for an exam, I legit want to know this for forest walks and garden tours.

The good news is that I can take a week per plant. This is not a race.

So now im thinking… Might need 1 palace per plant… But generating so many palaces seems like a big and hard task. As this is my first attemps.

No i dont think 1 palace per plant is neccesary. Id put 1 per loci.

This is a lot of information for one locus. I would create a structure that divides this information into 5 parts and then put one herb per 5 loci.

Then I would structure my palaces in strict fashion with 5 loci per room and place one herb per room.

Locus 1: Common name, Latin name, French name (custom images based on phonetics)
Locus 2: Tastes (create a universal image for each potential taste and reuse them)
Locus 3: Affinity (create a universal image for each affinity and reuse)
Locus 4: Actions (create a universal image for each action and reuse)
Locus 5: Energetics (create a universal image for each energetic and reuse)

Loci 6-10: Herb 2
Loci 11-15: Herb 3

Herb one is in family room, Herb 2 in the kitchen etc.

Each memory palace I would do 30 loci containing 6 herbs and do as many palaces as needed for all the herbs. The reason for this is an average house or store can fit 30 loci naturally and comfortably.

Multiple images at the same locus should act upon each other.

Very interesting idea, Thank you for sharing it!

With your idea, what would I do if further down the line I wanted to ad more information to one set of herbs?

Example : Like lets say i would like to add planetary rullers of herbs (sun, jupiter, mars…) and… Maybe… Parts of the plant used (roots/flowers/leafs/stems…)?

How would I add 2 more loki for expansion of knowledge reason?

I was thinking of adding as a palace highlights of a walk I do every day. I could definitively add 15 to 30 loci along the walk.

I was thinking that maybe all those loci could have a door to my old appartment i had when i was younger

Every plant would have its own appartment along this walk with mani loci in this appartement.

Just not sure if i would become confused at some point because the appartment would always be the same.

Either add 2 more loci to each room in your palace or change your convention for one of the 5 loci to adopt more images.

The more I think about it the more I like the idea of using rooms as you describe.

And thinking that every palace created would be main system the plant acts on.

So all plants mainly used on nervous system would be in one memory palace.

And same for all other systems.

Actually there are many ways to get into it but it dépends on how much energy you want to give. Any book by Mathiew wood is a good start. Also there are many goos schools. Im studying at Wild Rose college of herbal medecine.
