I recently came across the way to memorize numbers. You should have a picture for the first 100 numbers. Has anyone done something similar but with the most common prefixes, roots and suffixes? E.g. mance as in performance, you picture something that has to do with quality (the relevance of mance), e.g. a golden badge with a thumbs up (to represent quality). And for per meaning “thoroughly" you imagine something related, e.g. a table that is thoroughly clean. And for form you imagine an hourglass, which are known for their forms.
So to remember the word performance you would make up a picture containing all the items described. E.g the table with a hourglass on it that has badges inside of it instead of sand.
Anyone tried something like this? What are your overall thoughts on this? Would it be more trouble than its wort?
I have thought of using something like this, I was studying latin roots, prefixes and suffixes a while ago. It seems like it would be too much trouble. I usually use images with similar pre/suf/root anyway. But it might be good for hard words.
Well if you don’t know the word it’s practically a nonsense word to you, isn’t it? And in that case some kind of loose association must be done. I was teaching my pupils the five biggest lakes of Finland and since neither of us speak Finnish although we formally live in Finland we had problems getting good associations. So we looked for just phonetic similarities that would help us. And that would be the way to go for all nonsens words I think? Or you could devise some kind of system with images for every conceivable syllable, but that differs a lot between languages. For example finnish doesn’t distinguish between P and B.

Completely missed your reply. I recently began experimenting with this and it seems like it is a good way to visualize difficult words. And you would always have a picture available for certain prefixes and roots, which will come in handy. You say it is too much trouble, but you are still using it? I noticed that i usually just need the prefix to remember the word. Are you doing like this:
Efficiency
Eff - Ace
Fic - fish
ency - Nancy from sin city.
Than every time you come across eff you use an Ace (your picture of course) to represent the first letters of that word?

But a word can be nonsense even if you know the word, i.e. “Efficiency” was would be very difficult to memorize if i didnt use the system. Yes, i agree that syllables work as well, that is how i usually do it. But i though that if i associate enough prefixes i would save time in the long run. Like you do when i associate 100 objects to the first 100 numbers.
I do use it sporatically, I just don’t have a standarized set of images for prefixes and suffixes. I usually try to think of something clever to represent the word.
Efficiency- Henry Ford (efficiently making cars due to assembly line?). Fish-in-sea(reminds me of sanctimonious- sank-the-moneys)? Fish-MC(rapping fish?).
