Major System only VS extended dimensions, which one will be better?

Hello everyone. I have few questions regarding adding Dimensions to our major system.

My journey to learn about these world of memorization started when I search for books and techniques related to studying about few years ago. During that time I found a book named “The Manual: A guide to the Ultimate Study Method by Rod Bremer” and as I had no idea about this community I had no way to know if this book is good or not, OR find most popular and better books, so I started reading it.

In the book the author is adding Dimensions to major system. Dimensions are as following:

  1. Location
  2. Color
  3. Action

These dimensions have predefined values attached to number from 0-9, here’s the table from the book:

Number Location Color Action
0 Jungle Grey Parachuting
1 Desert Red Showering
2 Lake Black Freezing
3 Field White Burning
4 Pigsty Blue Vomiting
5 Outer Space Orange Bleeding
6 Ocean Green Sweating
7 Mountain Pink Frying
8 Cloud Brown Sneezing
9 Football pitch Yellow Exploding

How to use it -

  1. lets say my number is 02567, then our chain would be
  2. “Sun”(my image for 02) + Outerspace (Location dimension) + Green (Color dimension) + Frying (Action dimension)
  3. We combine them and create a story

Benefits I feel -

  1. for 10 digit number, It’ll take only 2 image instead of 5 (for my 00-99 major system), for 20 digit it’ll take only 4 images instead of 10. Remaining will be dimensions. And regardless if I use dimension or not, linking images already requires actions or sometimes locations where actions is happening. That feels like 3 kills in one shot.
  2. No need to worry about which action, location to choose. I have sometimes faced problem to decide action between images, this may help me finding associations between images by default.

Problems I see -

  1. I want to know if adding dimensions to my major system will be effective or not? As then I will be limited by number of actions, locations I can choose when I memorize numbers.
  2. I will be limited to use only 10 actions, 10 locations to use while memorizing numbers.
  3. Also as I don’t have practice I dont know if I can remember color dimension effectively. Maybe I forget what color the whole thing was.
  4. What if dimensions repeats ? For example our number becomes ‘44567 93567’
Here number changed but dimensions are sameI am worried that this may confuse me, but I am not sure.
  5. Changing colors: ex number ‘44567 22789’. In the first 5 color is Green, in next 5 color is Brown, then my story world will change colors every 5 number.
  6. Chaging Actions and Locations: First 5 numbers could be sun parachuting in football field, next image could be a nun Showering in outer space. (nun is my image for 22). How to link them.
  7. How to handle repetitions of numbers?

All of these are anticipated problems, not faced one as I have not created my own dimensions yet.

Solutions I think of -

  1. For repetitions I am planning to create images that defines start of a repetition followed by number for times it repeats, and image for end of repetition.
  2. Creating an image or action if included that defines dimensions are same to previous 5 number.
  3. There could be many established solutions to most commonly faced problems.

I didn’t knew this question would become this long but your response will definately help me figuring out if its worth practicing or not, as we also have PAO (if i require it).

Lots of people talk about colours, I personally don’t like it. I prefer atmosphere/environment. Mostly because rain making things wet and slippery is going to affect what happens in a clear way but a thing being blue… doesn’t feel important (I sit the same way on a blue chair and on a red chair… But I don’t sit on a wet chair if I’m not wearing rain trousers).

I personally dislike using fixed actions too but lots of people do.

The best thing to do is try it out… You’ll see quite quickly what’s works and what doesn’t for you. And you can then troubleshoot the problems that you really have.

I think speed will be slower making a story to switch locations after every scene. It might cause confusion with longer numbers if you start in space go other places and back to places you’ve already been there might be mixing up what order you went and what was there.

One of the benefits of using a fixed set of linear locations is there’s no added cognitive load like there is trying to link to different locations that you can’t anticipate like you can a pre planned journey.

You can spend as much time as you want before memorizing something to get familiar with a journey or palace until you know it thoroughly. Also when using single digits speed will take a hit.
Maybe try adding to the environment in your palace as a setting for the location the PAO will be at. Instead of the first two being a person have it be an object that litters or alters the locus environment in some way.

Try Instead of having the whole scene change use a set path like traditional memory palace but let’s say 02 comes first you could have that area like the surface of the sun.
If it was 22 first there could be crosses or nun clothes laying around. My object for 10 is toys so there would be toys everywhere. If 32 the surface of that spot could be like the moon but you’ll still be keeping your sequence clearly defined.

Then the next 6 digits after the environment setting would be the PAO.

I have my own letter-color list; the letters can group objects and things by color. Furthermore, they must be characters, objects, etc., that are “overlearned”—so the process becomes automatic—or simply things you know very well and can recall effortlessly.
